Through the school, the students are asked to perform in the Actors Fund benefit concert in two weeks time. The request comes via Cliff Armbruster, the show's emcee, who used to be a serious actor but who has resorted to acting in television commercials to make a living in this, the latter stages of his long career. Many of the teachers want to use the opportunity of Cliff being at the school to provide first hand information to the students about show business. However, they may regret doing so when he provides information that is contrary to their beliefs, especially focusing in on the business side of the equation sometimes at the expense of artistic quality. But an encounter Cliff has specifically with Coco may provide greater insight to Cliff's words. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is on the verge of failing Leroy if only because he has stalled on turning in his term paper, the subject for which he has no ideas. An adolescent boy lurking around the school, he who wants to learn modern styles of dance beyond what he already knows, that being what he has been told and taught is outdated tap, may be able to provide Leroy with some ideas, as well as show Leroy what it means to quit or persevere. And Doris asks Bruno for a favor: write some lyrics for her currently lyric-less song, which may be easier said than done for Bruno as he has never put words to other people's music.
