Episode 1

When Paul goes away for a golfing tournament, Martin takes charge of a delivery of manure for him but it is accidentally dumped on the Bryces' drive. Hilda tries to help by ordering a skip, but it is also dumped, blocking the garage and attracting rubbish left by strangers. Martin is relieved when Paul returns, but put out that Paul manages to rectify everything where he failed.

Episode 2

Whilst Martin is at a works conference at a hotel in Bruges obnoxious young colleague Rex Tynan gets him drunk and plants a young woman in his hotel room, leading him to believe he has been unfaithful to Ann. Though incredulous Ann has her doubts when Martin tells her but fortunately Paul comes to the rescue by tricking Tynan into telling her the truth. Martin is restrained but Howard takes more direct action against Rex Tynan.

Episode 3

When Paul buys a recently-vacated house in the close as an investment, Martin is concerned about what his tenants will be like, but in the persons of Dan and Diana Danby, he has found his ideal new best friends: a dull couple into jam-making and being in bed by 9:30PM. Then comes the down side: Dan has a habit of obsessing with people he likes to the point of pursuing them everywhere, which is why they had to move. Now Martin is the latest object of Dan's fixation.

Episode 4

After saving a little girl from drowning in the pond in a park Martin is proclaimed a local hero, attracting press attention. Initially modest he soon starts to dine out on it, being extremely boring and causing Howard, Hilda and Paul to hide from him. Ann delivers a few home truths to bring him down to earth but there is a reward when the child's parents have a park bench dedicated to him.

Episode 5
Martin is over-joyed to be accepted as a member of the right wing Egremont club and typically bows and scrapes to Simon Dunn, the local member of parliament - who just happens to be a friend of Paul. At the same time Ann, an Open University student, is campaigning for better grants and when Mr Dunn opens her petition in his presence Martin resigns from the club. Ann decides to canvass for signatures in the local shopping mall, pursued by Martin, who tries to stop her though in the event they are both moved on by a policeman.

Episode 6
30 mins
Martin is organizing a charity event for the RSPCA, a Civil War enactment battle, but his hopes of being the Cavalier leader are dashed when Paul turns up in full Stuart costume, so he settles for being the Roundhead general. The event will end in a single combat between Martin and Paul, and as Paul has recently had a run of bad luck, Martin hopes it will continue on the day. Indeed, during the fight Paul falls down, claiming that he has sprained his ankle. Martin has his moment of glory, having bested Paul at something at last--until he gets trampled by a runaway horse.
