5 Episodes 1984 - 1984
Episode 1
30 mins
Officious Martin Bryce organizes the lives of his long-suffering wife Ann and the residents of the close where he lives, including staid marrieds Howard and Hilda. He is therefore not happy when charismatic hairdresser Paul moves in next door, gets the group to sit at a different table in the pub, and is invited to captain the local cricket team. Martin is equally unsuccessful at his sit-down protest to prevent a lorry driver from parking in the close.

Episode 2
Ann is charmed on a visit to Paul's salon whereas Martin is merely baffled by his jokes. At the residents' meeting Paul's suggestion that the motor club tries another venue for its annual dinner is welcomed by the other residents, much to Martin's annoyance, worse Paul is chosen to replace Martin as chair of several committees. Ann hopes that Martin's having more leisure time will afford them both a better social life but Martin gradually claws back some of his responsibilities and it is Paul who takes Ann to a concert at the Festival Hall.

Episode 3
30 mins
Martin is scandalized to see a woman sun-bathing topless in Paul's garden and later staying the night. As Martin spies on Paul's house in the early hours, a police car arrives to take him away and Paul plays up to Martin's supposition that he is a criminal when in fact he was donating blood for an emergency. Not to be outdone, Martin also volunteers to give blood but wrongly assumes that Paul is propositioning Hilda when it is Ann whom Paul has asked out again.

Episode 4
Every year the Bryces and Howard and Hilda go to the Glockenspiel in Bavaria, but this year Paul is offering the use of a friend's villa in Spain. Martin is appalled at the change of plan, but calms down and asks Ann what she wants to do. She suggests the Greek islands and he actually goes with the idea. This also allows him to get one over on Paul when the villa turns out to be unavailable and Howard and Hilda end up at the Glockenspiel.

Episode 5
30 mins
Following a disastrous camping weekend, Martin is further dismayed when, at the committee meeting to organize the annual charity ball, everybody welcomes Paul's fresh suggestions, the fact that his friends will provide free services, and that the theme will be Vicars and Tarts. The evening is a huge success but on the way home, Martin appalls Ann by telling her that he has blackmailed the local newspaper editor into running an account of the ball, giving him all the credit and misspelling Paul's name. Ann makes him see the error of his ways.
