Rheumatoid arthritis affects around one million people in Britain, nearly one in fifty of the population, of both sexes and all ages, but predominantly women. The disease appeared in Europe in the Industrial Revolution and has baffled doctors ever since. Reviews the situation and reports on the claim of a breakthrough made by a group of scientists which has already led to research on a vaccine. If the scientists are right, and the illness is caused by an infection similar to tuberculosis, it opens up the way to new treatment. Reveals a breakthrough in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis; it is now believed that it is caused by the lack of a particular sugar in the immune system. (Source: BFI)
