Bears & Coyotes

Fri, Apr 7, 2017

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most heavily visited park in the country. The sheer volume of people generates a lot of trash and food waste that tempt the park's mascot, the black bear. Unfortunately, this can mean dangerous encounters for visitors and trauma or death to the bears. Park biologists show us how they manage bears and humans to keep both safe, including the latest in bear DNA research. Then we learn about the wily ways of coyotes in the suburbs, using hidden cameras from the Atlanta Coyote Project.

National Park Under the Sea

Fri, Apr 7, 2017

Biscayne National Park, just south of Miami, is all about what lies beneath. Ninety-five percent of the park is covered in water and is best explored by snorkeling or diving. EcoSense follows a group of divers, some veterans, some disabled, on the park's Maritime Heritage Trail of 6 shipwrecks, complete with submerged historical trail markers. The trail is an opportunity for archaeologists to study the human history of Florida's reef, and for visitors to experience a trail like no other in the National Park System. Pulitzer prize winning biologist E.O. Wilson expands our horizons with his wisdom on how places like national parks can preserve the planet.
