Nichijou primarily focuses on the daily antics of a trio of childhood friends-high school girls Mio Naganohara, Yuuko Aioi and Mai Minakami-whose stories soon intertwine with the young genius Hakase Shinonome, her robot caretaker Nano, and their talking cat Sakamoto. With every passing day, the lives of these six, as well as of the many people around them, experience both the calms of normal life and the insanity of the absurd. Walking to school, being bitten by a talking crow, spending time with friends, and watching the principal suplex a deer: they are all in a day's work in the extraordinary everyday lives of those in Nichijou.

The future Earth; with over 80% having been annihilated in a great war, the rest live under the dominion of a race known as The Third. These beings possess a third Space Eye on their foreheads, and watch over the Earth and it's remaining populace, granting it a limited amount of technology; those who infringe on the so-called Technos Taboo are harshly dealt with. Meanwhile, Honoka, a desert wanderer, along with her sand tank's sentient AI, Bogie, makes her living as a jack-of-all-trades, performing whatever tasks folks may require. This ranges from simple deliveries and escorts to giant insect exterminations. The only task she refuses to do is take human life. Nonetheless, her skill and grace with the katana has earned her the name "Sword Dancer". However, upon rescuing a quiet wanderer named Iks, who also holds the attention of the Third, she finds herself starting to think more deeply about her own inner thoughts and emotions.

Years into the future, colonies have been established on Mars. Resources on the dying red planet are thin, and the domed cities have resorted to a gladiator contest to determine which of them receive the most rations. Layla Ashley is the representative fighter for Serena City, Mars. She and Speedy, a doll breeder, run across Nei, a mechanical doll with curious characteristics. Fifty years ago, scientists discover a group of comets that are on a collision course with Earth.
