Mike Sweeney and his family move from Toronto to suburbia, Durham County to be specific, after his partner is killed in the line of duty. He's a homicide detective and has transferred to the local force and just as he arrives, finds himself investigating the murder of two high school students. Mike's wife, Audrey, is an ER nurse who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. His teen daughter Sadie hates having had to move and is resisting parental authority as a result. His youngest daughter Maddie is afraid he too will be killed. Mike also finds that his neighbor is Ray Prager, someone he's had an unfortunate encounter with in the past. Both men have secrets that they do not want revealed and Ray is a very violent man who apparently will stop at nothing to get his way.

Mike Sweeney is drawn into a web of his own deceptions as he confronts the murder of his lover, Nathalie Lacroix. His daughter Sadie navigates the dangerous waters of teen sexuality. Ray Pragar is thrown into chaos when his wife leaves him.

Nathalie Lacroix's autopsy reveals she was still a virgin. As well, her hair was cut indicating her killer may be keeping trophies. When the police subsequently find the bodies of the missing Travis sisters, also with their hair cut, they conclude they have a serial killer on their hands. In flashbacks, Mike remembers his time with Nathalie. Now on her own and with her access to their bank account closed, Traci Prager spends the night in her car. She tells Ray she wants a divorce. Ray recognizes someone in the strip bar. He also invites the Sweeneys over for dinner. At school, Sadie confronts the boys who razzed her which leads to her being suspended.

The real estate's agent's dead body is found and the police attribute it to the serial killer. They also find the business card Ray Prager had given her the previous day and Mike Sweeney begins to think he might be their man. Prager however has been weaving enough stories about his relationship with Mike to have the other police think he might on a vendetta. He's also worming his way into Audrey Sweeney's life and planting seeds of doubt about Mike's fidelity. He's also told her about the car accident. Ray tracks his wife Traci to the motel where she works and causes a scene resulting in her getting fired. Audrey doesn't get the job she applied for and Mike's response further alienates her and drives yet another wedge between them. When he tells her that Ray is a person of interest in two murders, she accuses him of acting out of jealousy. Sadie has some important information that casts doubt on Ray Prager's alibi for the night Nathalie Lacroix was murdered.

Ray Prager takes drastic steps to eliminate the one piece of evidence the police may have against him. Mike is more convinced than ever that Ray is guilty of at least Nathalie Lacroix's murder but has to admit that the other killings may have been committed by someone else. However he can't explain how all four of the victims had their hair cut in the same way if there's more than one killer. Claire Bissett tells Mike what Ray did to her when they were in high school. Mike also learns why Ray withdrew his police complaint after Mike ran him down. Sadie is convinced she can get Ray Jr. to tell the truth about the alibi he's provided for his father but Mike wants her to stay out of it. She doesn't follow his advice. With Ray's continued interference, Mike and Audrey's marriage reaches the breaking point. Ray continues to manipulate everyone around him, sowing doubts in people's minds about Mike's true intentions to the point where Mike is now a murder suspect.

Ray Prager's plan to frame Mike Sweeney seems to working. Sweeney is being officially questioned in the death of Nathalie Lacroix and he is forced to tell his colleagues where he was the night Nathalie was killed. He's also forced to reveal all to Audrey who doesn't take it well. Prager is still playing with Audrey's emotions and offers her comfort. The police search the Sweeney house and find the evidence Ray planted. Sadie however is convinced that her dad is innocent and convinces Ray Jr. that it's his father who is responsible. Sadie has a violent encounter with Ray when he catches her snooping around his house.
