This Dr. Phil news special is focusing on school "shooters" and not "shootings." Tonight's episode is to create awareness that there are clear signs/life experiences that skilled researchers have identified that most school shooters share. These traits can be used to identify students at risk of becoming school shooters and potentially prevent them from committing a monstrous act. Students and parents learn how to recognize these traits/markers, but are also empowered to say something to a trusted adult, or to report what they see/hear through an anonymous reporting system. Dr. Phil aims to empower the 50+ million students to become the guardians of their school, because when it comes to possible leakage, they are more knowledgeable than teachers and parents are about their fellow classmates. Dr. Phil's message is one of compassion because before a school shooter pulls that trigger, they are in pain.

Mon, Oct 28, 2024
This border situation has become a political powder keg, with both sides of the aisle using it as ammunition in this upcoming election in just a few weeks. But tonight, we're focusing on the Arizona border. With 378 miles of shared border with Mexico, divided into the Tucson and Yuma sectors, Arizona has become a hotspot for illegal crossings. The "gotaways" are people who slip past our Border Patrol without getting caught. In the fiscal year 2023, Arizona had more than 775,000 illegal border crossers, and at least 200,000 were "gotaways". There is a stretch of road called "Smuggler's Highway," which is a remote, treacherous stretch of desert where temperatures can soar to a blistering 118 degrees. Smugglers are leading migrants through this hellish terrain, putting lives at risk and overwhelming our Border Patrol agents. And if that weren't bad enough, the cartels are getting crafty in Arizona. They're using social media to recruit American teenagers to be their drug or human mules. Dr. Phil meets up with Sheriff Mark Lamb, who offers to take him on a "drive-along" on that stretch of road where high-speed chases happen every day, putting everyone on the road at risk. And sometimes, it ends tragically. Take the story of Wanda Sitoski. Her daughter, Valarie, sits down with Dr. Phil to talk about how her mother's life was cut short when a 16-year-old American smuggler running from the law crashed right into her...killing her instantly. And Dr. Phil meets Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels, who says he and his team are trying to protect 6219 square miles of rugged terrain. It's been nicknamed the "Smuggler's Highway" ...right on Interstate 10, which runs through California and Arizona. It's become the most popular route for smugglers from Mexico. But Sheriff's deputies in Pinal County say it isn't just cartels smuggling migrants...it's American teenagers. Right in the thick of it all, Sheriff Mark Lamb says the drugs and people being trafficked through this "highway" are ending up in cities all across America. In fiscal year 2023 alone, Arizona had more than 775,000 illegal border crossers. That's a whole lot of people slipping through the cracks. Sheriff Lamb tells Dr. Phil how he attempts to wrangle this situation. Plus, Cochise County Sheriff Mark Dannels tells Dr. Phil that in the last 31 months, there have been 500 to 600 pursuits coming through his rural county. Robert Roberson, who was set to be executed on October 17, 2024, for the 2002 death of his 2-year-old daughter Nikki, was granted a last-minute stay by the Texas Supreme Court. This unexpected reprieve followed a subpoena from Texas lawmakers requesting Roberson's testimony before the House Criminal Justice Committee. Roberson's conviction heavily relied on the now-disputed "shaken baby syndrome" diagnosis, but new evidence suggests Nikki's death may have resulted from natural causes, like pneumonia. Both the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals previously declined to intervene, and the Supreme Court's decision has sparked debate over the balance of power between Texas's legislative and judicial branches. The case has drawn national attention, bolstered by support from Dr. Phil, who testified before the Texas Legislature on Roberson's behalf. The debate has also reignited scrutiny of forensic evidence standards and Texas's 2013 "junk science" law as lawmakers and courts reconsider Roberson's fate. Dr. Phil speaks with Terre, a 2003 juror from Roberson's trial who now believes in his innocence, stating she wasn't presented with all the evidence. Roberson's attorney, Gretchen Sween, insists that, despite opposition from the Attorney General's office, he deserves a new trial. In support, Representatives Joe Moody (D), Lacey Hull (R), and Brian Harrison (R) have joined forces in a bipartisan coalition advocating for clemency and a retrial. Former Los Angeles prosecutor and news anchor Loni Coombs argues that if the Attorney General is confident in Roberson's guilt, they should welcome a retrial to resolve lingering doubts once and for all.
