Meg MacBain, heavily pregnant, walks seven miles to Dr Cameron's. There is doubt over the paternity of her child but will Dr Finlay's initiative provide the answer.

When the local minister sees something strange at the house of Mrs Elgin, he asks Dr Cameron to investigate. Dr Finlay tries to help a local family with disastrous results.

Tannochbrae 1928. After a patient dies of sudden heart failure, Finlay invests in a newfangled polygraph machine and Janet is his first guinea pig. Cameron isn't convinced of its value to the practice.

Finlay faces a moral dilemma and pressure from relatives when a millionaire dies at Hogmanay. Francesca Annis appears in an early role as a kindhearted teenager.

Mr Murray's two sons are a puzzle: one is top of the class and the other bottom. Mr Miller, the dominie (Patrick Troughton), puts it down to learning ability but Dr Finlay suspects a medical reason for the difference.

Dr Finlay's ideas for smartening up the décor of Arden House include the removal of a picture of Dr McGregor, the late founder of the practice, to the attic. Dr Cameron and Janet are uneasy, but Dr Finlay sneers at suggestions that the old doctor can influence the present from beyond the grave.

When a local well is closed by Dr Snoddie for reasons of public health, Dr Finlay's elderly patients are inconvenienced and he seeks to hurry things along by inviting eminent specialist Sir James Greig to dinner cooked by Janet at Arden House, much to Snoddie's chagrin. Featuring David Langton (Upstairs Downstairs) as Sir James Greig.

A local girl has fallen pregnant and she refuses to tell the father, her boyfriend, who is training to be a doctor at his tyrannical father's behest. She begs Dr Finlay to help her out.
