Episode 1

After three years in the Eastern provinces, Augustus returns to Rome, and visits a brother anonymously to learn what occupies the people- it's huge: a famine that must be caused by whatever prevents grain being delivered to bakeries. Livia is taken by a slaver, but is recognized an auction, hence saved, by senator Piso. Gaius replaces the corrupt grain prefects by his young kinsmen Tiberius, Drusus and Iullus. While Gaius finds the grain merchants and hidden fleet from Egypt, ambitious Domitius murders his accomplices to cover up he was behind the price manipulation, while a prosecution is omitted so Augustus can play the hero rather then risk the scandal festering. Drusus' Germanic concubine, Gemina, is unwelcome to the family, so Livia must appease his aristocratic mother in law. Following Antigone's death, Tycho returns with his daughter, wishing to work for Livia again.

A loyal slave is drowned just in case he saw Julia's infidelity with Domitianus. Piso and all Rome wonder why Augustus wants to impose a law practically forcing marriage upon patricians, despite his own family's marital immorality, Agrippa is appalled to be delegated last minute passing it through the senate. Drusus would prefer a military career to wedding Antonina, whose mother opposes the union after another nightmare about her son supposedly accusing Julia of his murder. The threat of an alternative for the bride as vestal virgin for 30 years, under a high priestess who clearly seeks revenge on Julia's family, only has her run away in vain, her mother only budges when Livia plays her worst blackmail card. Livia fears Gaius lost sexual interest in her, but it's only seminal exhaustion after some brothel fun with Gemina.

Episode 3

Gemina is confident Gaius's child, which a human sacrifice 'guarantees' to be a son, which Livia failed to, allows her taking over the 'queen ' spot, but is killed is a cat fight between them. Agrippa helps her cover up, Augustus realizes all but is satisfied to avoid a real scandal. Drusus and Tiberius got their general posting at the Rhine army, but show little talent and Drusus gets seriously wounded. They fear to be ousted hearing Livia is banished to an island indefinitely.

Livia claims to be resigned to her exile, actually on senator Piso's rural estate, 'freed of Roman intrigues', yet predicts someone will come running to resolve another Roman crisis and instructs Tycho to find out who orchestrated the famine: Domitianus. When Agrippa's wife gets murdered, he swears bloody vengeance at any price. Augustus warns he can't allow self-justice, but orders the three princes -who cover for the culprit- to find and eliminate the murderer first, desperate to avoid losing his right hand kinsman. Livia is shocked that Egyptian self-made trade tycoon Vibia demands, for keeping silent about Marcella's murder, to get access to high society by a socialite wedding, but finds a widow who is desperate to escape her abusive uncle-guardian. When the boys ask for help, she conceives a complex plot to have Vibia blamed and stabbed by Agrippa, earning Gaius's pardon by suggesting he adopts Agrippa's sons to appease him, although serious competition for their own offspring.

Episode 5

Gauis having adopted Agrippa's sons, Livia and her clan fear them may succeed as Augustus's heirs. So she plots to read and change his will, which is duly kept in the temple of Vesta. In Germania, Tiberius is proud to share military command, but Drusus fears it's a sidetrack, whether they get blamed for a defeat or hit by the barbarians, which happens to one. Tycho forces a Vestal virgin to provide the testament 'just for a day', but she confides into high priestess Turia, who seizes her change to turn tables on childhood playmate Livia, whose betrayal had her publicly whipped and forced into the nearly ending thirty years in chaste temple service. Livia caves for blackmail to sign over all her possessions, but comes up with a sacrilegious murder alternative even Tycho hesitates to execute, and a technicality twist to 'justify' the bloodshed.

Court intrigues for Augustus's succession intensify as Gaius's health looks worrisome. Agrippa's sudden death on a family trip robs his pre-teen offspring of their main asset, and his testament makes Livia the richest woman in Roman history. The marriage alliances are hot again, especially widowed Julia's hand. Returned from Germania, able general Drusus and unstable Tiberius stand a real chance, but Tiberius hates Roman intrigues and runs away, brother Drusus brings him home.

Augustus has decided to re-wed his daughter Julia to Tiberius, making him the heir presumptive, but the family is intriguing to get the unwilling bride and groom to comply or conspiring against each-other. Domitius feels threatened, as Livia knows about his famine ploy, so tells Vibia's brother she had him murdered, inspiring him to attempt murdering her on the way from Piso's estate to the home wedding. He and his henchmen, all masked, do a poor job, despite the element of surprise, so Tycho, who feels fucked by his mistress and cursed by the sacrilegious murder of the Vestal high priestess, can still save the day.
