After three years in the Eastern provinces, Augustus returns to Rome, and visits a brother anonymously to learn what occupies the people- it's huge: a famine that must be caused by whatever prevents grain being delivered to bakeries. Livia is taken by a slaver, but is recognized an auction, hence saved, by senator Piso. Gaius replaces the corrupt grain prefects by his young kinsmen Tiberius, Drusus and Iullus. While Gaius finds the grain merchants and hidden fleet from Egypt, ambitious Domitius murders his accomplices to cover up he was behind the price manipulation, while a prosecution is omitted so Augustus can play the hero rather then risk the scandal festering. Drusus' Germanic concubine, Gemina, is unwelcome to the family, so Livia must appease his aristocratic mother in law. Following Antigone's death, Tycho returns with his daughter, wishing to work for Livia again.
