The day Dr. Mark Sloane is to be 'honored' as Man of the Year at the Roast, where comedians makes merciless fun of him in the Jokers Club, which despite its fun-loving name is also a cesspit of envy and blame, Andy Baxter, a sideman who made a surprise appearance grossly insulting the speaker, Lou Summers, and dropping trou he's killed during a very short power break by a knife in the back. While Steve is conducting first interrogations, the killer knocks out Jesse and stabs Lou to death. The crowd provide multiple clues and suspicions, but Mark figures it all out by elimination on accounts of motive and opportunity.

Both Sloanes are surprised to hear she knew her dad wanted her off his hands for several days, not knowing he's offering mobster Tommy Toussaint to repay a fortune he embezzled two years earlier- they find out when the crook kidnaps Mark and Barbie...

Then John produces proof she was too close again with Frank, but denies hiring the PI to the Sloanes. Livia now tells Mark she lied to give John an alibi. Betsy, a blonde jogger in the neighborhood, dates both Jesse and Steve, who worries once having busted her brother. More details and minor witnesses further complicate the picture, but Mark figures it all out...

His daughter, who took care of the 'firm' for years, is furious to be shoved aside again from the new project, the 'Gangland' casino for which she got the governor to sign a private bill granting the state's first-ever license by bribing politicians, but can't go trough with having him killed by a sniper, and decides on kidnapping her old man- but gets Mark instead, while the real Mr. G is mistaken for Mark even by Jesse, who needs him to testify a customer who made a bad fall in BBQ Bob's was simply drunk... Steve investigates the murder by sniper of Chester Chumley, the old man about to retire and close Ponyland, an old-fashioned children's ride, who was prepared to donate the Malibu land to Community General for a supervised patients care 'wellness center'; Chester's nephew and heir Lucas is more likely to sell the valuable beach property, which would fit into the casino plan...

While Mark is her radio guest, she gets a call in the long-lasting search for her mom; she doesn't take it seriously, but after the show an assistant shows that the caller, Joanne Lombardi, knew about her secret birthmark. Meanwhile, Jesse warns everybody that his visiting mother is a terror by being too nice- she surprises even him by offering a full partnership in her private practice in Minneapolis. Denise goes looking for Joanna, finds her dead and is arrested. Mark fills in as radio host, and while providing sage advice over the air, snoops at the station. Someone plants the murder weapon in her flat's aquarium, but its obvious place convinces Mark it's a frame; then is appears Joanne was not a mother but turned in the Arriaga family with Immigration, but how can he trap the obvious suspect?

Trying to get Claude eligible for assistance, Steve discovers his identity is false, he's actually Andrew Basevich, an escaped Missouri convict condemned for murdering his wife Sharon; he admits but claims he was innocent, which hypnotic regression seems to confirm. When a sheriff's deputy turns up for his extradition, Mark emotionally blackmails Steve to go investigate in St. Louis, decades late but against the clock. Even when he finds proof, the legal proceedings seem unstoppable until after Claudes six months prognosis expires...

Mark is asked by a friend to cover for a cruise ship's Doctor, who has gone on his honeymoon, splitting the medical duties with Jesse and Amanda, and Steve tags along for a much needed vacation. Barely aboard, they must save multimillionaire Robert Brantigan, who somehow had taken a triple dose of insulin. Jesse and Amanda drown in patients, especially after Mark takes on the duties of the injured Activities Director. Robert goes missing, and his wife Clare reports him missing to the ships' Captain. News reaches the cruise ship that his drowned body has been recovered. Steve learns Robert's daughter Tracy (from his first marriage) has access through her pharmaceutical internet business to the drugs that are found in Robert's body during Amanda's autopsy, and she determines he's been murdered. His wife suggests he may have been suicidal, and definitely drunk when she saw him the night before, then accuses his daughter Amy, who confides in Steve that his recent angry outbursts were due to a brain tumor he'd told nobody else about. The L.A.P.D. talks to the sister of Clare's first husband, Carl Donahue (who also perished at sea on a cruise), but Clare points out she wasn't then, and isn't now in her husbands' will - but the sister tells Steve she was paid handsomely by his insurance company. Key pieces of evidence are found hidden in Amy's cabin. Will Mark, Amanda, Steve and Jesse be able to put all the clues together to catch the killer?

The whole gang, plus Alex Smith and Amanda's rascals, is invited to observe the shooting of an episode of "Frontier dad", a family series about Wild West hero Dash, starring Carl Simpson who gets a bit old but still does some stunts himself. His stuntman Jimmy falls to his death after multiple sabotage, including the radio instructions. Steve investigates high-profile undercover as the new stuntman, while Jesse temporarily replaces the fired medic, and diagnoses Steve hurt bad enough to see Mark in hospital. They learn Carls ratings are down while his teenage sidekicks are eager to take over center stage, while the producer feels pushed by Carl, someone else fears for her part. Jesse also gets a small part and enjoys snooping, helped by a cute secretary. Then a locked door nearly kills Steve and Carl in a take of an explosion, and the one man who had opportunity for that once was injured because of Carl. Mark discovers on tapes a trampoline sabotage proving Jimmy as the intended victim of the fatal fall. Yet another actress's medical diagnosis leads to other suspects...

The three doctor sleuths are celebrity guests in cooking shows on the Cuisine Chanel; Amanda even has a passionate relation with a star chef, René Fontineau. They soon learn the business is not relaxed but highly competitive. After a fire on the set and anaphylactic shock strike and kill René, Steve starts a murder investigation in what turns out to be a cesspit of grudges, greed and other personal or financial potential motives for the channel's sole owner, Keith Dunn, who once started as partner in a Cajun restaurant with René, the surviving star cooks and even Rene's nephew and personal assistant Josh, all of whom are found to tell lies which Mark must sift trough and figure out the part of fate.

When Jake Caldwell brings in his wife to the hospital, Mark learns it's Caroline, another woman besides the spouse Gloria he already knows, and Jake is in fact a bigamist. Just after Gloria finds out, she gets wounded and two days later Jake is killed, but by one or two shooters? It also comes out that Casanova Jake had a mistress on top of his wives, and both of them had invested their own money into his sinking business -he leaves them only debt- and his secretary's loyalty to the point of doctoring papers smells of another lover. Meanwhile, Steve finds he may be in a similar situation with his own girlfriend Maeve Michaels.

Now noisy construction work drives Steve crazy at Mark's beach-house, he decides to move out, making his dad nostalgic. When Jesse's girl friend Lana dies in the pool of a fully computer-controlled house after disregarding a warning to keep out, Steve considers domotics both for his criminal and residential searches. Bruce Locatelli, the creator-CEO of the model which killed, suggests but refuses to say formally that his competitor Donald Purdy deliberately sabotaged his system by reprogramming it via the 'backdoor'. Mark finds out about Locatelli's past, but then he dies in an accident involving his own system at home; however it appears he may have planned to be saved by his maid who was held up by an exceptional traffic queue. Then the other doctors learn Locatalli may still be killing by pre-programming, and could have done so in Steve's new home, where Mark is indeed locked inside...

Mark and Steve go fishing; when they return they find med student Mickey Hoving, who was house-sitting, murdered, according to his wife Jill who is sitting next to him but unharmed by armed robbers. All physical evidence contradicts her story, and indeed she has a lover's row at the hospital with Dr. Donald Ward, which Jesse knew about, but she convinces him not to speak up. The only stolen effects are found dumped in the ocean; Dr. Ward tells Mark about their affair without accusing Jill. When Mark finds a contact lens, he realizes Ward is a suspect too, or probably the pair of them did it together- at her trial, they seem to be playing an elaborate game, but how can the Sloanes disprove it or is it too late already?

Despite his clumsy and willful appearance, his honesty gets Steve picked in a TV dating program by candidate Lily Wilson. On their first date, in a park with cameras lurking around, he gets shot, but not seriously wounded; on their second, a car runs her over fatally. It turns out she was the -never before mentioned- sister of Community General doctor Frederick Wilson. After her roomy and friend Jean points Steve to P.I. Lou Tyler, he and Mark find out about Dr. Wilson's dark past...

While waiting for Steve to perform an arrest, a vase is smashed onto his skull, expertly staged as a bath-drowning. Director Miss Winkle is most uncooperative, but Steve works out that Hawk was working on a robbery case, involving retiree Bart Ellison who was recently released from jail and still had a $2,000,000 loot, but he dies from an OD. The sleuths' theory being the motive was his hefty inheritance; Mark has himself signed in as retired banker Brinkley by Jesse, who helps Steve look for what Bart spent his ill gotten gains on. Friendly nurse Julie Crane is left a painting as memento; administrator Zanuck steals a valuable timepiece, valued a good replica, then finds a rat attributed to the garbage strike, while Steve researches Zanuck's father was in on the robbery. But then Mark has to blow his cover to perform an emergency tracheotomy...

Steven has barely started his investigation when female NIS agent Warrant Officer Hannah Bernstein bursts in and claims the case for the military, illegally, yet he gentlemanly accepts to collaborate; even after they know he used the wrong hand base commander Colonel Lucien Chandler orders her to close the case as suicide, but she continues helping Steve 'on her own time'. They discover some suspicious things, such as an affair between one Davis, the colonels adjutant, and his wife Susan Chandler, and Mark figures out how everything fits together.

Drew's assistant, who was impressed by his memory, recruits Mark for an audition as contestant, which he aces and thus can snoop on the set. Meanwhile Steve finds Saul had Drew's secret cell phone number and investigates, helped by Jesse, how a car accident while bird-watching got Saul into his wheelchair and ties to Drew...

Steve questions in vain the real, clueless Eddie, a fence in prison.
