When Nené Sanfilippo is killed, Montalbano is charged with the investigation and discovers that the Griffo couple, two elders who resided in the same building where Nené lived, disappeared after having made a trip to Tindari. Montalbano thinks that the two are not accidental and that there is a link. The two are then found killed with a bullet in the head. The same night two people died: Ignazio Cucchiara, an electrician by profession, is killed with six pistol shots and Alberto La Russa, a goldsmith for hobby, is found electrocuted in his wheelchair transformed into an electric chair. Montalbano is in charge of this latter investigation; the first belongs to Augello. La Russa had been disabled for about thirty years because of a fall from a horse, he was very rich and had many interests. Everything seems to indicate suicide, but when a holographic will is found that leaves everything to his brother Giacomo with whom Alberto had recently re-established relationships, Montalbano begins to think and investigate. The truth will be much more complex than it appears at the beginning.
