Paul Raynor is fatally stabbed on the back row of the privately run bus from the port to the capital Honoré on the day he arrived after a prison term in Guadeloupe. He sat next to the back entrance, which is stuck from the outside, restricting the suspects to the people aboard, who could all easily be seen by others. While Jack's team meets Florence's fiance Patrice Campbell, initially mistaken for the awaited police reinforcement in Dwayne's absence overseas, all three other passengers and the bus driver are found suspicious. Oliver Carr, discharged from the British army for striking a superior, was hired by the casino Raynor robbed to follow him search for the never recovered cash loot. Bus driver Butterfly Brown moonlighted, being underpaid by manager Harold Crane, as document forger, but ignores who hired her. The knife is found besides the road, belonging to a female passenger who admits planning to kill him to revenge a loved-one but backed down, while another corresponded with him in jail for a rehab program he deserted. Jack is also puzzled that the key Paul carried fits a locker box containing only the undersized swimming trunks of local giant Elliot.

Xander Shepherd, who manages the local zoo, founded by his ex-pat British father, is killed by a tranquilizer dart. Mooney quickly dismisses the apparent option for an outsider and concentrates on the small family and staff team. Xander's brother Dylan was passed-over when he returned from England. Ec-con employee Theo Roberts seems very loyal, but is found dealing in protected animals. Yet the rumors and the truth about why Xander left to boarding school prove crucial.

However the English presenter is murdered by medication overdose which makes her drown at sea. While J.P. patiently works with the commissioner's niece Ruby, Jack and Florence concentrate on the program team. The studio boss was about to sue her to prevent a transfer, program producer Pippa Mayhew possibly hoped to star as she presented the unaired pilot. She flirted with both director and technician. The method, as her dinner wasn't spiked, and who had access to the drug, inspire Mooney to unravel the mishaps.

The whole fishing town applauds 'festival queen" Tiana Palmer arriving by boat with the triple sacrifice of rum, flower and bread, but she was fatally stabbed and the loaf is missing. Tiana's boyfriend is also a suspect given his gambling debts, but Florence's isn't amused that his information in confidence is used against her fiancé's best friend. After Mooney cracks the case, Florence gets in great trouble nosily following up alone.

Checking up on her fiance Harrison Green, whom she foolishly shadows alone, Florence Cassell finds his corpse and is badly hit herself. Jack and the remainder of his team must first find and hospitalize her, then solve the case, which clearly links to the previous murder, in fact as part of a more comprehensive criminal plot.

While presenting his popular island radio reggae show live, popular deejay Dezzie Dixon is shot on air in his locked-up studio while producer and studio boss popped out to the food truck across the street. The commissioner arranges for DS Madeleine Dumas's return to Paris to be delayed to urgently prevent tourist panic after Adam Renshaw's corpse was found in the police station, so Jack's beach shack serves as temporary HQ instead of the apparent crime scene. A torrential rainstorm lashing the island forced him, two Engish study mates and their trip leader camping in the jungle to seek refuge. Adam's corpse was dumped inside the police station, which was locked.from the inside Jack must work out their relationships, who the killer is and how the victim got left on his doorstep. Meanwhile widower Jack anxiously waits till he can join his daughter Siobhan in England, where her steady boyfriend left her for another.
