Six months after arriving from the UK, the island's TV station SMBC's investigative reporter Melanie Sharpe is strangled and dumped in her home pool. Runner Benny Morgan heard a struggle and saw something leave before he arrived. A loose button convinces Neville it must have been new anchor Garfield Tourné, but he was on air interviewing his daughter Hélène at the time of the murder. Editor Henri Pigal admits Garfield refused to air the revelations Melanie prepared, for one about political candidate Elmina Blondeau's broken environmental promises. Garfield also has a terrible record molesting, dumping and buying off female staff. Neville's allergies-suffering even leads to an aroma candle torching the beach house, and most personal possessions, so he must move in a while with just-returned Florence. Commissioner Selwyn drives fresh sergeant J.P. to despair by 'standing in' for Ruby as useless 'assistant'. Neville finds the 'time machine' to crack he case.

Russian concert pianist Pasha Verdinikov was shot in his home studio, and while dying wrote "A.S." with his blood. The only suspects comprise the members of the household; his conservatory dropout son Joseph 'Joe' Verdinikov, summoned by the suspension of his allowance for an unknown purpose; fresh widow Grace; housekeeper Maggie O'Connell; and gardener and handyman Delford Adams. DI Neville Parker works out that A.S. is Grace's once lover Aiden Shawcross, Pasha's then agent. His fingerprints are on the murder weapon, but he was killed 20 years previously in a car crash investigated by Commissioner (then DI) Selwyn Patterson. While DS Florence Cassell is sent to Scotland Yard to check on criminal records, DS Camille Bordey rushes back to Saint Marie when her mother Catherine Bordey is attacked and sent to the hospital by an intruder. Catherine called DI Parker when the break-in occurred, and he rushed to her home and interrupted the attacker before he was able to strangle her to death.

Catherine is in hospital following an attack and daughter DS Camille Bordey rushes back to her bedside from Paris, filling in for DS Florence Cassell, who is in London investigating the victim. Catherine tells Parker she spoke to victim pianist Pasha at the harbor. That lead takes the team to a hospice on the neighboring island of Sainte Hélène where the bedridden Aidan Shawcross is dying of cancer, unable to harm anyone. That also leaves unanswered who was buried 20 years ago, killed by Pasha and Aidan to fake Aidan's death. Identifying the body while uncovering the illegal doings of morgue official Godrell James and tracing Delford Adams's mother and late father explains the murder of Pasha and a microwave explains the how. Catherine's worsened condition in hospital is touch and go for the Bordeys.

Local captain Skip Marsden was killed by a harpoon in his chest, with his dinghy on a beach with 11 miles from where his yacht, which a spoiled young viscount soon to be married hired, moored at sea by a buoy. Also on board are his three equally drunken stag party guests from prestigious English college, two fellow upper class and a self-made lawyer. Parker wonders how Marsden ended up on the beach when his dinghy was inoperable and GPS confirmed his boat had never moved. Marsden also had hairs in his throat from his dog, which died two months ago. The discovery that Marsden was smuggling cocaine in a secret compartment aboard, using the fixed buoy as a drug drop, complicates the crime further as a fifth person was interested in the whereabouts of the drugs. Parker thoroughly vets the party boys, finding romantic and financial potential motives, until it all ties up with the smuggling.
