In the peaceful Scottish village of Kirkdarroch, fire breaks out one night at the home of Tom (David Tennant) and Kate Kendrick (Anna Madeley). Their friends and neighbors, Jess Milner (Cush Jumbo) and police sergeant Steve (Matthew McNulty), raise the alarm. Steve drags out Kate, who is already dead, but the three Kendrick children are padlocked in a room. Only Tom, the village GP, is pulled out unconscious by Steve but survives. It's discovered that all five were drugged with an IV drug before the fire and one of the girls had pine needles on her pajamas. CCTV shows Kate buying the padlock at a big box store. It quickly emerges that the family was not as happy as it seemed. Kate was on antidepressants and had recently flipped her car while driving Jess and the children, and Jess and married Tom were being unfaithful to their partners, having an affair.

The residents of Kirkdarroch come out in force for the funerals of the girls and Kate Kendrick. Tom gives the eulogy, but there is no mention of Kate. Kate has been cut out of all the photos with her daughters. Jess meets an old friend of Kate's (Selin Hizli) - and is deeply shocked by what she discovers. As the village grieves, Jess wrestles with her part in the tragedy. The investigation takes a new turn when a witness Dylan (Lewis Gribben) comes forward, and the police home in on their prime suspect. Intimate secrets come to light. Jess confesses to Steve about her infidelity with Tom, but qualifying it was only once. This rattles their harmony over ongoing IVF treatments.

Steve is suspended for interfering with the witness, Dylan. Armed with new evidence, the case looks cut and dried, but a new revelation raises doubt as the emotional ripple effects of the fire take their toll on those closest to the tragedy. Tom is released on bail.

As the villagers try to rebuild their lives, they have to learn to be honest with themselves and each other. However, whether they ever get to the truth remains to be seen. Steve and Jess' last IVF did not result in pregnancy. At the memorial gazebo fundraiser, Steve has a confrontation with Tom, and Tom tells everyone about the witness interference. Tom fires his attorney and then shows up at Jess' door. He claims his father abused him on a child. When Jess visits Carol later, she finds he lied about any abuse. Jess then finds Steve drunk at the pub, depressed. As they talk later, Jess asks to end the IVF. Tom's mother (Maureen Beattie) goes to the police to report his menacing and threatening behavior along with Jess. Jess is determined to discover the truth about what happened on that night, while also mending her damaged relationship with her boyfriend Steve due to her infidelity, and helping his children face their sadness. In a flashback, on Kate's phone messages, Tom hears she visited a divorce attorney. Tom is heard asking Kate to purchase a padlock, making it obvious he was framing his wife for murder. Tom and Kate are seen arguing, then Emily runs out out of the house. He is then seen getting an insulin vial. Kate finds her girls unconscious in bed. Tom is then seen injecting her. Lastly, he injects himself as smoke curls under the door. Later, police are seen arresting Tom.
