Detectives investigate neighbors, friends, and current and past boyfriends before they discover the killer hiding in plain sight. In the end, the killer was identified through DNA as Moe Gibbs, a 34-year-old Barnes County correctional officer who was living in the same apartment building as Mindy. Mindy had fought and scratched her attacker and collected his DNA from underneath her fingernails. When the DNA was submitted to CODIS, the federal law enforcement DNA database, there was a positive match to an unknown individual. This was due to the fact that Moe Gibbs had changed his name from Glen Dale Morgan, Jr. to help conceal his prior crimes, which were rapes of at least five women. Gibbs had also served time in prison from 1994 to 1998 for an unrelated attempted murder case. He was indicted for Mindy's homicide and went to trial. The first trial ended in a hung jury. His second trial ended with a verdict of 'guilty' by the jury in November 2007. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. This same homicide was also outlined in the ID true-crime series 'Murder in the Heartland' in the December 8, 2020 installment 'The Farmer's Daughter'.
