When Karl Karlsen's crimes come to light, it also sparks an investigation into the death of Karl's former wife in California who died in a 1991 house fire. It is determined that, on January 1, 1991, Karl Karlsen intentionally set the residence fire and knowingly killed Christina Ann Alexander Karlsen, age 30, of Murphys, Calaveras County, California, so that he could collect on a $200,000 life insurance policy he took out 19 days before her death. In November 2013, Karl Karlsen pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for his son Levi Karlsen's death. Karl Karlsen's second wife, Cindy Karlsen, worked with investigators when she learned that her husband Karl Karlsen had taken out a $1.2 million life insurance police on her life.
