When a rescue mission to save trapped cave explorers uncovers the body of a woman wrapped in plastic, Det. Superintendent Dalziel and DI Pascoe have a murder on their hands. The dead woman had been there for quite a long time died from a number blows to the head. She is eventually identified as Lynn Barron who had vanished some years before. There was one suspect at the time of her disappearance, Eddie Summers, but he died in a car accident soon after. Although divorced at the time she disappeared, she had at one time been married to the man who is now the Chief Constable and the senior investigating officer is now the Deputy Chief Constable. The dead woman had reportedly been arguing with her sister and her mother-in-law. The police also learn that a convicted killer, who had also wrapped his victim in plastic, is now out on the street.

Dalziel and Pascoe's investigation comes under increasing attack, despite their best efforts to search for clues. However, they battle harder than ever to uncover the truth about the mummified remains, which they believe are connected to the case of the Yorkshire chief constable's ex-wife, who vanished more than 20 years ago.

When a jockey dies at the racetrack, the detectives find themselves thrown into the sinister side of the sport after discovering he was poisoned with a blood-thinning drug. Their investigations lead them to links with a stable hand who has been missing for over a year, a gambling lottery winner, who happens to be the racecourse's biggest client, and a mysterious vet.

DC Spicer finds the missing Julianne Henshaw but the girl has been murdered. She also learns the girl went out with lottery winner Jake McNally and was 10 weeks pregnant when she died. They also learn however that she was sleeping with someone else. They also uncover a bay smuggling ring. The solution to the crimes however lies among the staff at the stables and a series of interrelated events.
