After his senate campaign dies, Cliff is down in the dumps. He knows J.R. is somehow involved but can't prove it. A reporter comes by hoping to get a raw, uncensored interview with him, but instead talks to Digger, who mentions that he believes John Ross Ewing III is actually Cliff's baby. Cliff, seeing yet another chance to humiliate J.R., concurs and lets the story go to press. J.R. and Sue Ellen hide the true facts from Jock and Miss Ellie, as do Bobby and Pam. J.R. gets a judge to acknowledge the birth certificate, so Cliff sues for paternity instead as it will force a blood test to confirm who the real father is. The simple blood test is inconclusive because J.R. and Cliff have the same blood type. A more advanced test is done. Meanwhile, Allen Beam continues to court Lucy, while playing coy with his real girlfriend. At a party at Southfork, Harve Smithfield comes to the house and reveals that J.R. is the father. As the family heads out to a charity dinner, J.R. stays behind and, for the first times, holds his son.

Pam, still afraid to have a baby because of her genetic disease, continues to shun Bobby's affection. Further pressure comes from her boss, Harrison Page, who wants her to go to Paris on the fashion industry's annual shopping trip for new clothing lines. Bobby sees her off at the airport. On way out of the terminal, Bobby runs into Jenna Wade, who has just put her daughter on a plane. Harrison Page asks Pam about it and she turns to see Bobby give a rather long "hello" smooch to Jenna, but she plays it off as an old friend. Page, who has been around long enough to know what he's really seeing, smiles and boards the plane. He has no romantic interest in Pam but knows that if her marriage is on the rocks, she'll continuing working hard at The Store. Bobby and Jenna get reacquainted with dinner and then a picnic to a spot they used to frequent as teenagers. Pam calls from Paris and gets antsy when she learns Bobby is out, knowing he's with Jenna. J.R., of course, learns of Bobby's meetings with Jenna. Pam returns from Paris and is still a cold fish. J.R. fans the flames by making fun of her predicament and Bobby's "affair" with Jenna. Pam voices her suspicions that J.R. got her the promotion at the store. She later has an argument with Bobby over it, leading him to drive over to Jenna's apartment. There, he kisses her but comes to his senses in time. He tells Jenna he loves his wife and leaves. At Pam's office, Jenna barges in and confronts her about her marriage or sham of a marriage, forcing Pam to face the reality that she had better do something about it or Jenna will take Bobby for her own. Pam finally opens up about her fears of children and Bobby and she agree to try to work to save their marriage.
