Eric also bumps onto a dying mystery colored man, whom he saves from a fatal wound inflicted by a mini weather balloon which penetrated his chest. He turn out to be radio weatherman Jared Boyleston, who just joined the private tornado chasing team of Ronnie Hale and Leon Perez, whose probe gun he apparently used to cover up the numerous thefts amassed as loot in his car. Ellie's parents ignored she lived with her Dade U campus lover, future USNavy cadet Travis Reeves, whose military future is over when Horatio reports he fathered her baby. However guilt is not a s it seemed in either case, and they link.

Several years ago, the writer Marilyn Milner became rich and famous by starting a popular series of vampire novels with elements inspired by serial murders. She bought a private island and its mansion with profits from her first book. Marilyn has not appeared in public for a number of years, but new novels keep being published in her name. A trio of ghost writers have actually been hired to write these novels, while posing as Marilyn's servants for the public. Andrea Edison was considered the best writer of the team, but she had started demanding better payment and some credit for her work. Andrea is found murdered in Marilyn's mansion, with her body hanging upside down and completely drained of blood. The unidentified male caller who reported the murder to the police may have been the killer. The CSI team quickly realize that the murderer patterned the details of the murder scene on elements from Andrea's horror manuscripts. This narrows the list of suspects to the people who had access to the unpublished manuscripts: her two fellow ghost writers, their editor, and Marilyn herself. Marilyn seems to have disappeared a few days before Andrea's murder, during a vacation in Italy. The CSI team has to find out the current whereabouts of the missing writer.

When another tortured female corpse is found on the beach with missing eyes, Horatio suspects "The Miami Taunter" is back. The team focuses on prime suspect Dr. Esteban Navarro, but he has a solid alibi. The MO with Vanessa Tillman seems different as an insulting scrambled call to the parents is lacking, but actually the mother ignored it, being used to slur, and the answering machine was stolen from the Tillman home, leaving a small blood race, which is nearly destroyed by the inexperienced CSI recruit. Ryan and Walter have her search for another way and concentrate on available evidence. It points to unbalanced, traumatized Tauter-fan Phil Pinkerton, who after a failed escape confesses too easily and is murdered in his police cell. Horatio traps critic Scott O'Shay to have the voice recording produced and promises Esteban and his lawyer, who proclaim his innocence proven, to get them later, formally forced to close the case.

A Few Dead Men

The police has to restrain father Bruce Faber from leading a public attack on the three men who are released after 19 years served in prison, as new evidence overturned the conviction as then school jocks for the sadistic murder with genital mutilation of younger schoolboy Troy Faber. So the father is prime suspect when the first of the three is murdered at his home, later a second and the local singer who had joined the campaign or the revision trial, but also just admitted having been raped. A local entrepreneur still champions the trio's case, having been the fourth jock-musketeer.

They find a bug in his apartment and learn that the company CEO planted it, because Stone had cancer and he wanted to make sure he didn't reveal anything confidential. They also learn someone sent him a text telling him that his time is running out. They trace the text to a protester who believes is the epitome of corporate greed. She denies sending the text. They later learn that Stone changed his will to include his former partner. They learn that Stone was developing a new weapon that could have been the one that was used to kill him but CEO claims all of the weapons are accounted for. But when someone who's trying to rob a place has the weapon. During the gun fight, the weapon backfires. With the weapon they were able to determine where the shooter was when he shot Stone. They discover that it's the partner but he reveals the reason behind killing Stone which leads other discoveries.

She was murdered by presumed serial killer Esteban's MO, but he has a solid alibi, more corpses are found and there is evidence pointing to his father Diego. Grandmother Vina Navarro, who owns the estate, pretends to help but tries with a top law firm to cover for both. When that falls through as the trophy cellar is found, she and Diego turn on each-other, he gets murdered and Esteban gets caught in between.

When freelance journalist Denise Baines is poisoned, the CSIs suspects her murder was provoked by a story she was doing on Miami Councilman Randall Stafford. After Stafford's DNA is found at her apartment, his attorneys Darren Vogel and Gabrielle Wade are able to dismiss the evidence on grounds of possible tampering, as Delko had to put the samples down out of his sight while intervening in a domestic dispute, which was probably staged to that end. The team suspects the journalist was actually preparing a story on Vogel, after discovering that Stafford helped cover up a murder committed by another of Vogel's clients, which suggests a pattern of manipulation using blackmail, the only way he could get junior partner Wade confess the only proven lawyer misconduct. Stafford manages to have a ballistic test by Boa Vista thrown out of court, even discredit her so all her evidence could compromise convictions based on it. Ryan argues that only his romantic rival' for her, the case's public prosecutor Josh Avery, was in a position to switch the contested bullet in her CSI lab.
