The Longitude Chronometer, a device that will change the world, is stolen from HMS Petrel by pirates working for the legendary but supposedly long dead Edward Teach - better known as Blackbeard. On board the Petrel is Tom Lowe, an English spy working undercover as ship's surgeon. Lowe's mission is to prevent the Chronometer from falling into the hands of pirates - and if the opportunity should arise, to assassinate Blackbeard.

Antoinette's torture continues at the hands of Jagger, now using Lowe's sketchbook as evidence that Edward "Blackbeard" Teach is alive. To comfort herself, she recites an encrypted rhyme. Jagger cracks the code - the chronometer Blackbeard sold to the Spanish will lead the fleet to a surprise attack from Blackbeard himself, the only one who knows where the Spaniards, and their treasure, will be.

Apprentice Tim is still nursing the lashes on Tom's flogged back when Blackbeard comes muster the surgeon for his master plan: sinking the Spanish silver fleet, which the doctored chronometer leads off course, with barrels full of explosives and diving up the treasure with a submersible. To both's horror, Tim is ordered to take Tom's place, as teach heads to pleas from his Selima, who also inspired Charlie being promoted captain of the flag ship. . Seeing arch-enemy William Jagger's ship waiting for them, Blackbeard calls off the largest-ever prize to engage a duel without prize, even if that takes stabbing Charlie and throwing him overboard. On the island, Tom declares his love for Kate but she for James, despite carrying Tom's baby and asks him for an abortion, which he refuses on medical grounds, so she purchases a dubious toxic potion from Nally. James implores Tom to save both at any cost, which Lowe achieves by transfusion of his own blood, claiming the baby needs two fine 'parents'.

Blackbeard
