The BAU learns that the emergency situation at FBI headquarters was a means to free Benjamin Merva from captivity. What has happened to former FBI agent Owen Quinn, he part of the Violent Crimes Apprehension Program (ViCAP), over the past year has all been leading to this moment. What the BAU members also learn is that Quinn's ViCAP colleague Mary Meadows was the inside person orchestrating Merva's escape, and that Reid, among the BAU team members, was chosen as their next target, he who has been abducted as part of Merva's escape. They also discover that Garcia, in being in the wrong place at the wrong time, has also been abducted by Meadows, Merva and their team. In his precarious situation, Reid is able to get some cryptic messages to his colleagues, who have to decipher the meaning of those messages if they are to save him and Garcia. They hope that what Reid is trying to tell them pertains to Merva and Meadows' core goal. In the process, the team also learns that Merva has not only mutilated and ultimately killed a handful of victims - the mutilation being the removal of each victim's hyoid bone while he/she was still alive - but rather that he has killed exactly two hundred ninety-nine people, Reid who may be symbolic number three hundred. If the BAU can figure out what's going on, they will discover ties to a former case.

When the mummified remains of numerous victims are found in the walls of an elderly couple's remote South Carolina home, Rossi, J.J., and Simmons are dispatched to track down a trail of clues that date back over 20 years. The hunt becomes urgent after BAU learns the killer has a specific ritual of when to strike, and like clockwork another person goes missing. Also, Rossi reconnects with his ex-wife, Krystall.

Because of his work on their last case, Prentiss puts in motion Alvez's reinstatement to full SSA status, which won't be processed until after their next case which means he will be staying behind at Quantico with a less than happy Garcia on that case. That case brings the rest of the team to Plymouth, New Hampshire where parents Kellen and Grace Butler were murdered in their bedroom, and their eight year old daughter, Ruby Butler, abducted in what looks to be a home invasion. Their initial thought, from precedent in such cases, that the unsub is someone who was within the Butlers' social circle changes as the case proceeds. They begin to understand that the unsub's motivation is abducting specific types of eight year old girls, he who doesn't believe the girls' parents are worthy of their daughter, ultimately reassigning the abducted girl to who he considers a more worthy parent or set of parents already within her social realm. To stay ahead of the unsub, the team has to keep the nature of what's going on from the media, which may not be the easiest thing to do, media exposure which could risk the lives of the abducted girls instead. The team has to figure out how the unsub has been monitoring his targets within the narrow scope available to him. They may not yet realize that the unsub has a specific end play to resolve an outstanding issue in his life. Through this case, Rossi ponders a negative response to an indirect question asked before heading to Plymouth, he instead wanting a positive response on the matter.

The next case the BAU embarks upon is brought to them by Lewis via Dr. Daryl Wright, her ex-husband who she had not seen in fifteen years. A Ph.D. in addictions treatment, Wright surprisingly approached her while she was giving a presentation in Los Angeles where he is based. The surprise is due to the fact that their split was a rocky one due to his alcoholism with which she was ultimately unable to help him and which resulted in the threat of abuse during their marriage. The case involves a spike in overdose deaths of people who were seeking treatment for one substance addiction or another, and whose deaths occurred within twenty-four hours of leaving rehab. The item tying the so far seven victims together making them possible homicides is that they died of a heroin overdose regardless of to what substance they were addicted and regardless of what type of rehab through which they went. In addition to the heroin, the M.E. on victim number eight discovers an ultra-violet tattoo of a broken wing on her person, as well as unknown chemical substances within the tox screen, which will be common among all the other victims they are able to test. Garcia is able to determine that most of the victims attended one of the several clinics owned and operated by Dr. Robert Smith, the "Dr." an honorific in name only as his degree in business is from a non-accredited aka fly-by-night online institution. They have to determine if "Dr." Smith's predatory business as opposed to health based practices are enough to make him their unsub. Beyond her and Wright's own experiences together coloring how they view the case, Lewis, despite happy for the turnaround in his life, cannot help but examine why their marriage did not work, especially in he crediting his current wife, Mary, for his five year sobriety. Wright, too, has to overcome some demons which he may have made worse by approaching his ex-wife.

Flesh and Blood

Prentiss and Mendoza's first date, which has already been postponed several times on Prentiss' request due to work issues, is further interrupted by the BAU's next case. In separate incidents two weeks apart, two lawyers were found murdered in Rockville and Baltimore, Maryland respectively, their bodies wrapped in construction tarp and placed near a dumpster in a downtown location. Both men, reported missing forty-eight hours before their bodies were found, were severely beaten pre-mortem before their hearts ripped out of their bodies, that the cause of death. Both victims were in the same graduating class but have no known professional connection. Garcia is able to find some surveillance footage of one of the victims shortly before being reported missing, he being approached by a young woman in a parking lot, the encounter seemingly in the nature of a damsel in distress being assisted by the unwitting victim, the proverbial knight in shining armor. The female cannot be the one who committed the murder due to the psychical strength required, she who is assumed to be working for the unsub. When a third victim is discovered - he another white collar male - Garcia is able to find a connection between the three victims, tying them all to a Robin Rhodes, who died a few years ago, and whose death was eventually declared accidental much to the dismay and anger her mother, prominent Baltimore psychiatrist Dr. Elizabeth Rhodes. In addition, J.J. finds something oddly familiar about the body discovery sites, which if she can figure it out may be the key to figuring out what's going on and which may dredge up some bittersweet memories for Prentiss.

Alvez is not too excited about Lisa's want to host a housewarming party, it solely a means for her to get to know his BAU colleagues, the only intended invitees. Whether or not the party happens will have to wait until after the BAU's next case, which takes the team to Portland, Oregon, where a yet unidentified young, fit looking man bound with duct tape on several parts of his body and clad only in boxer shorts was caught on home surveillance footage taken outside the home yelling (paraphrasing) "he's after us" before the "he" is seen taking the man away. This man's abduction is seemingly related to the murders a week earlier of married William and Sarah Mendelbaum, a retired pediatrician and community volunteer respectively, in their home, they bound with duct tape on several parts of their bodies, and their eyes singed before they were stabbed multiple times. The word "us" in the abducted man's yells for help implies that there is another person abducted with him, probably a wife or partner. And from the footage, Reid can see that the man's eyes are also singed. In interviewing the Mendelbaums' son, Ray Mendelbaum, who discovered the bodies of his parents, J.J. discovering that he failed to mention to the police in his earlier interview with them that power was turned off in the house brings into question either his mental state or other items about his parents he would rather not discuss. The darkness in the house leads the team to believe that the unsub has some sort of visual impairment, the reason for singeing his victims' eyes. The Mendelbaums end up being the keys to this case, but even if the team is able to discover why the Mendelbaums were targeted, they still have to discover the identity of the young man and his not yet seen partner, and their connection to the Mendelbaums for the team to discover the identity of the unsub.

Prentiss and the BAU team fly to Iowa to investigate the disappearance of three 10-year-old children who appear to have been abducted from their homes in the middle of the night, with surveillance video from a neighborhood park as their only lead to finding the children's whereabouts.

It's the Monday after the team returns from an out-of-town case. Prentiss and Reid have been at the office all weekend reflecting on what happened, Reid who is chastising himself for not seeing the truth earlier, Alvez has his arm in a sling as he recuperates from an injury sustained on the case, but arguably Rossi has the most deep seated scars, at least emotionally. As such, Prentiss sends him home as he has not yet unburdened himself from the case, he needing to do so with Krystall especially as their wedding will be taking place in three weeks and he internalizing his emotions is not what they need going into matrimony. That case started out as a single murder of fifty-something Monica Feinstein in Nashville, Tennessee, her dead body found in her burned house, she dead before the fire and her face removed from the rest of her head. Monica's nineteen year old son, college student Carl Feinstein who had only recently moved out, is certain the person that killed his mother was her boyfriend, Paul Macintyre, the two who had a whirlwind two month courtship and who had only gotten engaged the day before, something about which Carl was suspicious. This information is only the first clue in the team discovering that "Mac", only an alias, is a con man and master of disguise. They still had to reconcile the unsub's wooing of vulnerable middle-aged women against the fire and the removing of his victims' faces which are incompatible with the standard actions of a con. But what Rossi will have to reconcile himself is not so much the fact that he could have easily died at the unsub's hands, but what that situation actually means for his future with the BAU.
Episode 14
Sick and Evil

The BAU heads to Lewiston, Maine, where two young women were murdered in separate incidents in their homes late at night, there being no sign of forced entry, and each woman stabbed 22 times in the abdomen. By the time the BAU arrives in Lewiston, there are two more victims, a husband and wife. Initial thoughts are that age may have something to do with victimology or that the abdomen stabbings may be associated with the women trying to get pregnant. But when J.J. and Lewis meet local ghost-chaser Courtney Mably, they may have stumbled onto the connection between the murders: that each victim lived in what locals believe are haunted houses, the unsub probably trying to cleanse the house of what he/she believes are infected souls. As arguably the most outwardly enthusiastic local who believes in such lore, Courtney -- who earns a living solely through her blog on the subject -- becomes the chief suspect. If Courtney is not the unsub, inserting herself into the investigation may place her life at risk at the hands of the actual murderer. Throughout this case, Rossi cannot help but be preoccupied by his near-death encounter with Everett Lynch, who is still at large, but who Prentiss believes will be caught eventually, but not at the rushed pace Rossi is trying to force.
Episode 15
Truth or Dare

The team has been at the office for two days amusing themselves with no case on the docket but still being on the clock, while Rossi has been with Krystall making last minute preparations for their wedding in two days. That quiet is broken with a case that takes the team to Los Angeles, Rossi who decides to go but who vows to Krystall to make it back in time for the wedding. That case has two victims thus far, each victim who was involved in a vehicle accident, followed by the driver of the vehicle that caused the accident shooting the victim dead point blank before escaping. Eyewitnesses at the two incidents can identify that it is the same driver/shooter, but one eyewitness who stated that the unsub was seemingly hesitant in firing the shots. When the unsub is identified, the team discovers that he is only working on the directive of a person pulling the proverbial strings. When Garcia discovers a connection between the victims and the shooter, the team also discovers the identity of the so called puppet master and his end goal. In pursuing him, two members of the team will have to play a dangerous game of truth or dare - the game which got the puppet master to this point - which may determine how the case resolves itself. The team members involved will have to deal with the aftermath of that game played.
