Grumpy Lothian detective Ray Lennox is stuck with greenhorn partner Amanda Drummond, who questions his old-fashioned manners and doubts his experienced, cynical views on another schoolgirl disappearance, which he ascribes to a long-jailed serial killer. Evidence is scanty and the press screaming for moves, so their boss overrules Ray, who simply continues his investigation. He duly mistrusts the victim's nitwit unemployed mother and elder sister who was 'too sick' to chaperon as usual, plus the ever-absent father, and follows the mother in time to prevent her molesting a local sex crime ex-con.

Ray shares in the irate family's grief when Britney's murdered corpse is found, dumped in a public place, confirming the MO of the serial killer Confectioner, hence the convicted man probably isn't him, or the mastermind. Douglas must collaborate with a Parisian busybody on his own case, given the French victim. To Ray's boss's horror, he not only disproves the false confession of a lunatic by scaring him of gay prison abuse, but Ray's own prime suspect in Scottish MP Richie Gulliver, a sanctimonious right-wing moralist on the police board, whom he knows from AAA, while the case nearly drives him to relapse in the bottle, while tormented by some childhood trauma.

Team Ray concentrates on the S&M dungeon duo, gullible Graeme Cornell and his manipulative partner, Scottish MP Richie Gulliver, who is on the police committee, so scares the commissioner, while ever-rude Dougie Gillman drags the MP's 'liberal' lawyer around abusively. Ray is haunted by memories of provocative Richie bagging on his addicts' support group, yet manages to set a trap for Graeme to learn how Richie uses him, yielding a politically damning scandal, but no actual suspect, meaning the white van is key. The victim's mother goes berserk as the elder sister is missing a while, but Ray soon tracks her down safe except for some guilt.

The real Confectioner, Gareth Horsborough, turned himself in, prepared to confess but only on his terms to Ray, whom he enjoys tormenting psychologically.
