Craven Arms

David Masterman is an artist and a teacher who has the pleasure of teaching an art class to a group of lovely young women. Three in particular are of interest to him. First are Ianthe and Katherine Forrest, who have little artistic talent but are both quite attractive. The third is Julia Tern whose artistic talents in some areas match his own. There are few young men around - it's the years just after World War I - and mores are changing. Masterman doesn't see himself as having the temperament to settle down with just one woman, but when one of them leaves for several months, he wonders if he has fallen in love.

The Mill

At 17 years of age, Leslie Hartop's parents decide the time has come for her to move out and make her way in the world. She moves in with the Hollands who live in a old mill. Mr. Holland doesn't use the mill per se and is a scrap dealer by profession. Mrs. Holland suffers from the dropsies and spends most of her time in bed either writing to their son, a soldier stationed in Germany, or reading letters he has written them. Leslie is a hard working girl, but also quite innocent. When Mr. Holland makes sexual advances, she submits but soon finds herself pregnant.

The Sullens Sisters

Tommy Adams has become quite the grown man. Now 19 years old, he is the man of the house, working full-time and supporting his widowed mother. He has also taken quite a fancy to Rachel Sullens, a 26 year old woman who lives with her 19 year old sister, Lindy. Rachel goes for a walk with him and even kisses him, but makes it known that she is engaged to Arthur Dagnall and Tommy shouldn't get any ideas. Tommy offers to marry her when she becomes pregnant and the baby's father, Arthur, vanishes. Tommy's mother knows something is going on and warns Tommy that he cannot marry without her permission until he is 21. Soon however, Tommy begins to step out with Lindy and when she too becomes pregnant, Tommy finds himself about to become a father.

The Watercress Girl

Mary McDowell finds herself in court accused of throwing acid in the face of Elizabeth Plantney, a rival for the affections of Frank Oppidan. Mary and Frank had met when he wanted to buy some watercress. They were attracted to each other and soon were lovers. Frank very much wanted to marry her but she always refused him, without giving any reasonable explanation. Angry, Frank stopped seeing her and soon met Elizabeth with whom he became engaged. One night as they were walking along a country road, Mary suddenly appeared and threw the acid in Elizabeth's face, severely disfiguring her. Through flashbacks, Mary and Frank recount their story and important information not made public in court is revealed.
