Episode 1

The Gun

The squad is sent to attack a German bunker that is perfectly positioned to halt their advance. They are to attack the bunker with the aide of a Tank which is to provide firepower to support them as they advance. As they move along the route to the bunker, they are ambushed by a German squad backed by a small howitzer that destroys the tank before they can counter attack. After killing the Germans the squad decide to haul the howitzer with them to attack the German bunker. As the squad hauls the gun towards the bunker they are tracked by a German patrol who had gone to check on the gun crew which were not responding to radio calls. Sgt Saunders gets a report from a runner that the Germans are in pursuit and manages to ambush and wipe them out. The squad then manages to position the gun and wipe out the bunker.

The Losers

Saunders and Littlejohn are assigned to destroy a German bridge with the support of six Gis. However, the meeting point at St Viet is bombed and they do not find the squad. They meet in the debris four soldiers imprisoned waiting for court-martial and Saunders decides to use them to help to accomplish their mission. But he needs to use his leadership to show that they must help him.

Ollie Joe

Sgt. Saunders and his squad rescue the two survivors from a German machine gun nest that belonged to a wiped out company and they join the squad. Soon they realize that one of them, Ollie Joe Brown, is a neurotic needy man that never knew his father or mother and is looking for a father figure to become the perfect GI since he adores the army. But Saunders will discover dark hidden secrets in his new soldier.

The Brothers

Marcel will show the weak parts of the German forces to Hanley. Soon Hanley and his men realize that Marcel is a coward man frightened with the war. When they meet Leon, he insists to bring Marcel with their reconnaissance patrol with tragic consequences.

The premise of this entire show is flawed. Sgt Saunders outranks a major-as he self reported himself as a Chaplain. Line NCOs outrank chaplains, medical personnel, etc. clearly, written by a person who knows nothing about the military. There is no moral dilemma.

A Child's Game

Sgt. Saunders and his squad are assigned to take a farmhouse to be used as outpost. When they arrive, they find the spot protected by a squad of teenage German soldiers. Saunders decides to convince the youngsters to surrender but it is not an easy task.

The Letter

After a confrontation with a German squad in the front with casualties, Saunders and his squad return to rest in the outpost. They receive their correspondences and Saunders receives a letter from his younger brother disclosing that he has enlisted in the army to fight. Immediately after, Saunders receives two replacements and one of them looks like his brother. Saunders projects the image of his brother in the rookie soldier and tries to protect him like an older brother.

Headcount

After a battle, Saunders and his three-man squad bring three German prisoners to their outpost where there is a POW camp. However the allied forces have been attacked and retreated and the wounded Major Fisher orders Saunders to take the German POWs to the American headquarter since the Intelligence would be interested in them. They find a truck still working and after a headcount, they realize that there are eighteen prisoners and only five American soldiers to control them. Along their journey, there are escape attempt, uprising and many difficulties to control the German prisoners.

After three days without sleeping, Saunders and his squad are tired and stressed, with friction between Littlejohn and Caje. They return to the outpost to rest, but Lt. Hanley assigns another mission to the group. The conflict between Littlejohn and Caje increases and Saunders loses his confidence in them. But soon they stumble upon a German machine gun nest and Saunders is wounded and trapped. What will happen next?

The Bankroll

While resting from a mission, Kirby borrows money from his fellow Pvt. Jeetleman to play poker and promises half of the money he wins to him. Kirby makes a lot of money, mainly from his opponent Joe Farley that gives notes to him. Jeetleman becomes happy since his wife has just delivered a baby and he will use the money in a partnership of a gas station. But soon Kirby learns the character of Farley and when Jeetleman is wounded, he has a surprising attitude.

During a reconnaissance patrol, Lt. Hanley and his squad has a confrontation with a German machine gun nest and the survival is the German medic Peter Halsman. He is taken prisoner and walks with the American squad. When there is another shootout, he lives a dilemma between his duty and humanity.

The Furlough

During a reconnaissance patrol, Sgt. Saunders loses two men shot by a German sniper. Private Harold Vincent asks Saunders to deliver US$ 300 to his friend, the orphanage director Ann Tinsley, during his near furlough. Saunders travels to the suburb of London and meets Ann. There are successive bombing and they have to move to the shelter with the children. Saunders gets involved with Ann and the children and decides to spend his leave helping Ann to rebuild the orphanage. But life is not easy in times of war.

Entombed

Lt. Hanley, his squad and partisans rescue a Maquis leader from the German camp. They are hunted down by a German squad and hide in an abandoned mine. When they are found by the Germans, they battle and the mine caves in trapping Lt. Hanley, an American private, the partisan, German Lt. Karl Mauer and a German private. They are forced to have a truce and try to find together a way out. They find a couple of lovers, a German deserter with pneumonia and his French love, inside the mine and team-up to dig a way out.

Saunders and his squad capture two German prisoners that had been ambushed and attacked by a group of gypsies. Their cunning leader Barbu explains that the German officer had wiped out his people and he promised to capture him to be executed by the survivors. However Sgt. Saunders does not deliver the prisoner and is followed by the gypsies along a dangerous journey.

Encounter

Captain Cole [James Daly] is reunited with his son, Jack [James MacArthur], who he hasn't seen in years. Jack is now a reporter who is sent to the front to cover the war. Jack arrives at HQ just as Captain Cole returns from a patrol and it is evident right from the start that his relations with his son are strained. Jack is stopped from going on patrol by his father but eventually manages to join a patrol with Lt Hanley and Captain Cole. The patrol is ambushed by Germans and is pinned down in a farmhouse. Doc is wounded in the first rush and manages to break away into the bush and make his way back to get reinforcements. While they are pinned down in the farmhouse Captain Cole and Jack realise that they are closer than they believed and manage to patch up their problems just as Caje arrives with reinforcements to relieve them.

Episode 20

The Gauntlet

While traveling on an army truck they are ambushed by a patrol of German's who kill all on the truck with the exception of Sgt. Saunders who is taken prisoner. While being transported by train to a POW Camp with other POW's they manage to break out and escape. Saunders teams up with an English and American POW, Sgt. Decker [Tom Skerritt] and as they are making their getaway, they are tracked by German soldiers with an Alsatian dog. The Englishman dies and Decker is attacked by the Alsatian and mauled. Saunders kills the two handlers and the dog and manages to get away with Decker after changing into German uniforms. As they are escaping they run into a small party of German foragers and attempt to bluff their way past but Decker makes a run for it and Saunders is shot and captured again. He wakes in a German field hospital where a Doctor administers drugs to ease his pain. While there the area is shelled and, in a drug induced stupor, he steals a motorcycle and makes a run for it through the barrage. He falls from the bike after hitting a fallen tree and awakes in the middle of a firefight between retreating Germans and the advancing Allies. He manages to link up with the British and on arriving at their base finds Decker there telling all that will listen how he escaped. Decker tries to get Saunders to not tell anyone about his actions and cops a belting for his trouble before Saunders walks out to rejoin the squad.

Episode 21

The Masquers

German soldiers are infiltrating the Allied lines dressed as Americans and Kirby is caught up in the action when he is involved in an ambush. He takes another soldier, Carl Driskoll [Roger Perry] prisoner not sure whether he is American or a German disguised as an American. They are both then captured by British Cpl. Tommy Behan [Gavin MacLeod], who is totally unsure who to trust. As they move along the road they come across a jeep that has been ambushed. The only survivor is Cpl. Marty Roberts [Nick Adams] who was a prisoner on the jeep. Now totally unsure who is who, Cpl. Behan handcuffs Kirby to Cpl. Roberts and marches his three prisoners away hoping to find help. They come across a hunter's cabin in the woods and decide to bunker down for the night. While there the cabin is approached by to soldiers and Cpl. Behan challenges them. They are German infiltrators and both are killed in the ensuing shootout but Behan is wounded. As they sit through the night, Roberts tries to talk the other two into tackling Cpl. Behan saying he can't stay awake all night. Behan feels he can trust Driskoll who seems to have stayed out of any involvement and asks him to keep the others covered while he sleeps. Driskoll takes his sten gun and then turns it on Behan and kills him. Roberts (who speaks fluent German) tries to convince Driskoll that he is an infiltrator also and, as Driskoll is about to kill Kirby, the owner of the cabin bursts in and takes him prisoner. He is a member of the French Resistance and decides to take them all to the American lines so they can work out who is who. On their way there they come across a German patrol and Driskoll shout out to warn them whereupon he is shot by the Frenchman. Kirby and Cpl. Roberts (who are still handcuffed together) make a break for it just as the Frenchman is himself killed. They come across a farmhouse and try to find something to break the handcuffs which they manage to do. Now separated Roberts tells Kirby he is not going back as he is scared he will be shot as a deserter. As they move out they are pinned down by the three remaining Germans. Roberts tries to distract to Germans by posing as an infiltrator but is killed by a group of GI's that have arrived on the scene and hear him speaking German.

Episode 22

A Little Jazz

A group of USO entertainers are on the way to the front when their truck blows a tyre. As their driver is changing the tyre they decide to have a practice unaware that a German patrol is moving in on them. Fortunately, Sgt. Saunders and the squad have also heard them and move in behind the Germans. The driver and accompanying MP are killed in the attack so Saunders decides to take the USO group with him while they finish their job. They work their way forward and come across a mill house which they decide to use as a temporary base. The USO leader Bernie [Dan Duryea] is making life difficult for Saunders and generally proving very difficult to handle. Battalion radio Saunders and tell them to hold their position as they are sending transport for the USO group. As they are consolidating their position their scout reports that a German patrol is moving in. They manage to kill the German scouts but are pinned down by the Germans heavy machine gun. Bernie decides to take matters into his own hands and, unbeknown to the others, raises a white flag. The German commander, Lt. Knubel [Hank Brandt] sent two of his men in to accept the surrender and, when they approach, they are shot down. Brandt is furious and sends for reinforcements. Saunders tells Bernie that his stupid action will cost them all their lives as the Germans will now take no prisoners. The other members of the group including Hank [Noah Beery Jnr] who has been wounded, Zac [Dennis Hopper] and Woody [Robert Easton] tell Bernie that he did the wrong thing. Hank, out of his mind, wanders out towards the shot Germans and is killed. The squad is running low on ammunition and Saunders and Kirby sneak out to retrieve ammunition and grenades from one of the dead Germans just as an attack is launched. As they fight back reinforcements from battalion arrive and relive them but it is too late for Woody who has died from a wound.

Nightmare on the Red Ball Run

A driver sleeps while driving a truck causing an accident. The Allied Major finds that Sergeant Rosie, who is the responsible for the trucks, is pushing his men to the edge to deliver his supplies. Kirby and Littlejohn offer to drive the trucks and soon Littlejohn discovers that the dangerous cargo is explosive and grenades. While driving, Kirby has friction with Rosie while Littlejohn learns the reason for his tyrannical behavior having a conversation with Corporal Sloan in the other truck.

A series of mishaps where those with him are killed whilst he is untouched leaves the other patrol members starting to believe he is right. During an attack on a German observation post Dolan is wounded and no one else is hurt making them realise he was not a Jonah.

The Partisan

Sgt. Saunders is assigned by Lt. Hanley to patrol a German area with a three-man squad. However, they are ambushed by the Germans and two American soldiers die. Caje is wounded and captured by the enemy and Saunders is also wounded and faints, and the Germans do not see him. When he awakes, he wanders and stumble upon a blind French woman in a small farmhouse where he passes out again. Saunders wakes up in the basement and meets Babette, who is treating him, and the Maquis Michael, who lives with her. When he learns that Caje is alive and imprisoned by the Germans, Saunders decides to help him to flee, but Michael says that he is healing his knee and cannot help him. But soon he uncovers a secret about Michael.
