Grace Wheeler Willis was a star, a very famous star. Every night in her house she watches one of her old movies. When she decides to set up a new show and her husband refuses to finance it, Grace coldly kills him, staging it to look like a suicide presumably due to a health condition. Lt. Columbo is not deceived by her performance. In the end, the murderer may escape punishment.

Columbo has to solve a crime at the embassy of a middle-east nation. The culture there is different, and the main suspects have diplomatic immunity. Also, to complicate matters, there is a student demonstration outside the gates, and the king is visiting the embassy. However, Columbo decides to investigate the matter in his own persistent way.

Nelson Brenner, a top CIA operative, is really a double agent who finds it necessary to rid himself of a fellow spy and make it look like a mugging. Brenner inadvertently leaves tiny clues in a photo shop at a carnival, on Henderson's corpse at the beach, in a tape recording he makes while in his Agency-approved identity as a speech-writing consultant - the kind of clues that no one would ever pick up on. No one, that is, except the rumpled, redoubtable Lt. Columbo. The indefatigable detective will find himself followed by mysterious agents, visited by the top man himself and entertained with a recording of "Madame Butterfly" in Brenner's own mansion before solving this difficult case.

A famous retired matador learns that his long-time friend and book-keeper plans to retire after he & the matador bear witness to a horiffic attack on the book-keeper's son by a bull at a recent tournament, and that the matador had shown fear which would destroy his reputation for bravery. Fearing the book-keeper could expose this revelation to his thousands of fans, the matador gets rid of him by luring him into the practice ring at his ranch, shooting him with a poisoned tranquiliser dart and then setting his pet bull on him. Columbo who's coincidentally on a family holiday in Mexico, is asked for his assistance in the investigation by the country's Chief of Police.

A stage illusionist kills his employer after the latter threatens to expose his true identity and past occupation as a prison guard for the SS during WWII to the Israeli government when the illusionist refuses to be a victim of his employer's blackmailing.

Charlie Clay runs a ship-building business owned by his father-in-law, Commodore Otis Swanson, who is not happy with his profiteering son-in-law's shady dealings. Nor is he pleased with any of the people closest to him, including his alcoholic daughter Joanna Clay, his elderly nephew Swanny Swanson or his lawyer Kittering. Soon the Commodore is murdered, and Charlie Clay covers it up by impersonating the Commodore, taking the corpse out on the man's yawl at night and throwing the body overboard. Lt. Columbo investigates this case with the help of a veteran sergeant and a 29-year-old novice. The rumpled, redoubtable detective knows Clay covered up the crime, but his assumption that Clay committed the crime may prove premature.
