Jewish Barber Ben runs his Boston salon with gay Buzzy, from whom he bought the ownership, and a bizarre team of locals including four R-named sisters Doyle. Faced with a wage costs rise, he tells them one job must be cut, and they should decide who will be fired. At first everyone tries to affirm being the most indispensable, but suddenly handsome, popular jock A.J. Salerno volunteers his spot, as he has an appointment with a leading sports recruiter and expects to be hired at last for his dream job: profession baseball player. After a colleague realizes he's just not elated enough, he admits the offer went to his brother, but solidarity finally kicks in.

A.J.'s 'childish' enthusiasm at another long shot at a better baseball team is laughed away by Danni, who convinces him not even to turn up and bury his dreams, as she did end her showbiz ambition turning 25. Only Ben dares refuse to sheepishly pledge for another charitable 'walkathon'. However he hires his irresistibly-enthusiastic simpleton cousin Lonnie, who always bluntly speaks the truth, albeit as unpaid intern. In the gang's pub, another pledge drive inspires Danni to sing again, and realize she must reverse her bad advise and encourage A.J. to keep chasing his boyish dream against dwindling odds.

A.J. enjoys his Spanish class, with Charmaine, but Danni insist he must have a crush on her, which he denies but gets into his head, until that's set painfully straight. While she denies it too, Danni realizes she still has crush on A.J. and must either get over him or settle terms, but it takes several awkward nocturnal failed attempts until they kiss up, only to agree they stay 'just friends'. Buzzy is annoyed by Joy assuming his falling out from the catholic church must be on account of an abusive priest and explains it's God failing to save his fatherly curate, yet hesitates when two adorable kid clients have the firsts names constituting the mourned father's name. Bragging about being the better catch leads to Ben and neighbor Doyle trying out meaningless sex.

Episode 4

A.J. initially jests without cruelty when Mo tells him over-eager Ben takes crap from his gym club bunch businessmen mates, ignoring Hank Damone even pisses on his leg in the shower after every bad joke Ben tells. Reprimanded by Mo that Ben remains scarred by a youth as jocks-bullied schoolboy, super-jock joins the conspirators towel-off to 'warmly' turn the tables of dirty Hank. As Ben is too sensible to pay WiFi so staff can waste his time on Internet, the chatterbox girls try in turn to get the 'sleazy' neighbor Travis's code for free, but are either cheated or chicken to pay him in kind.

Ben has been taking Mo's blind support as wing-man for granted, but now he's negotiating a merger proposed by neighboring tattoo parlor owner Travis, Mo openly refuses to be treated as sidekick anymore, although they end up agreeing on everything, while Travis is scared off. Buzzy's gay 'housemate' Tommy is delighted his bigot mother's death finally clears the way for a gay marriage, but Buzzy has mixed feelings about the senseless ritual which might even jinx a good deal since long, and the colleagues have their elaborate say on the mater.
Episode 6

Sparring with Mom, who asked to learn some martial arts, A.J. fell badly on his golden arm, needs multiple fractures set and is diagnosed unlike to pitch ever again. Mo's excessive guilt and precipitous efforts to make up the harm he did have surprising results for his nobly forgiving mate, who sought consolation in Internet letters. Ben duly fires Charmaine for verbally abusing customers systematically and daring him after a website declares the barbershop the rudest in town, only to reconsider when this draws a masochistic crowd, which is actually a dubious clientele, while the other staff struggles with the 'new house style'.

A.J. complains that Danni ruined his latest date Lucy by talking her into a short haircut, which he hates, stirring common reminiscing and ending up dating each-other instead. The gang mixes concern with unhealthy curiosity when they learn Mo's gay adoptive parents are planning a divorce, in vain stirring Ben, whom they sort of raised with Mo, to find out. Everyone is surprised when first Mo's ma Dottie, the n his pa jasper, arrive to explain.

Episode 8

When the guys learn that Buzzy is gambling with the money he'd set aside for his mother's medication, A.J. and Mo decide to lose a poker game to him on purpose, but it isn't as easy to convince Ben to do the right thing. Danni, Charmaine, and Joy make up the Doyle Sisters for a wedding and discuss what makes for a strong marriage, which causes Joy questions her relationship with Bart.

Episode 9

Ben grumbles when he hears his hated high school math teachers is coming or a shave, finds him and despite a sob story about cardiac risk costing him job and marriage barks him out. Circumventing their promise of secrecy to Ben by alternating sentences, his former schoolmates tell the other staff how the insensitive senior added to Ben's mortification when his pants gave out on commando day in front of the blackboard. Gently, A.J. 'shames' Ben into attending the funeral with the others, intend on discrete revenge, with mortifying result. Confident Mo is duly confused by Jo's mixed feelings about her failing marriage just now she got pregnant.
Episode 10

The gang minus Buzzy looks forward to their common informal Charlestown high-school reunion at the Doyles' pub, albeit wit different expectations. A.J. finds himself brought to again 'steal' Danni as date from her peacock-like original prom date. Ben's plan for revenge as business success on the class bully who is a mere traffic booth operator is 'crippled'. Mo insists on giving Charmaine, who unlike him never made the cheerleaders audition, a go at their 'guest performance', even if he must completely disrupt it.
