Due to John's lapse of memory and no alibi, it is not surprising that everyone believes the artist is responsible for the missing (and probably murdered) old man. It doesn't help that John had been painting a portrait of Justina as well. However, the vicar suspects the truth and gently pries the guilty secret from Justina, who is now a terrified conspirator of the man who killed her husband. With her help, the vicar solves the mystery and unmasks the real killer.
