Moments after Christy receives many generous donations from her friends in Ashville, Mission Director Dr. Ferrand arrives for a visit. His disapproval of Christy's performance weighs heavily on her mind, as does the problem of how to distribute the donations the mission has received. Her solution is to open a 'Trading-Post' enabling the residents of the cove to obtain the things they so desperately need while not feeling like they are accepting charity. Meanwhile, Miss Alice is injured while attempting to help David and Jeb Spencer string a telephone wire.

Christy becomes concerned when Becky O'Teale stops showing up for school. Upon searching for her Christy finds her hiding beneath the school house because the light hurts her eyes. Christy takes her directly to Dr. MacNeil with not regard for an oncoming storm. Dr. MacNeil's diagnosis is that Becky has advanced trachoma, and although he has studied the disease throughly he has doubts that he can cure her. In a side-plot, Miss Alice expresses her displeasure with the attentions Dr. MacNeil has been paying to Christy and Fairlight and Jeb Spencer have a disagreement over matters of money.

Theodore Harland comes to Cutter Gap to record some of the local folk music. With the assistance of John Spencer he records all the songs Miss Hattie knows. A woman accompanying Mr. Harland turns out to be Miss Alice's long lost daughter.
