The lives of all sea turtles begin once their eggs are laid on the beach by nesting females. They are left alone to fend for themselves against predators, the environment, and human impacts. Researchers have long known that once these tiny sea turtles reach adulthood, they will mate and females will return to the same beaches where they first hatched. But the great mystery lies in those years in-between. Where do juvenile sea turtles go once they reach the water? For decades this gap in knowledge was referred to as "the lost years." Now, a team of researchers in Florida has found an innovative way to tag and track these tiny turtles in ways no one had thought possible.

There, dozens of tame stingrays greet thousands of excited tourists each year, who come to the spot to feed and interact with the wild animals. But what impact might this frequent interaction have on the rays? Famous marine artist and scientist Dr. Guy Harvey has assembled a team of experts from the Guy Harvey Research Institute and the Georgia Aquarium that is trying to answer this question. The scientists are tracking the numbers of animals at the site over time and are looking at their nutritional and reproductive health.

Billfish: Battle on the Line?

Along Central America's coastline, ranging from Guatemala south to Panama, recreational fishing is big business. The unique oceanographic conditions of the eastern tropical Pacific make the area one of the best spots in the world for big game anglers to hook billfish. But intense pressures from commercial fishing operations have taken their toll on the numbers of sailfish and marlin in the region. Scientists with the University of Miami Billfish Research Program are using an ecosystems approach to study the animals, by integrating complex oceanographic data with high tech research tools. The ultimate goal is to develop local and region-wide conservation initiatives that ensure billfish populations remain sustainable for years to come.

Fish are the most diverse group of vertebrates on the planet, ranging from the gigantic whale shark to the tinniest minnow. Because of their diversity, fish have evolved very varied reproductive strategies that aren't widely known by the general public. Few people realize that some of these animals are capable of changing sex. Some fish species start their lives as females and later turn into males, others start as males and become females, while yet another group is comprised of simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning they can spawn as both males and females.
