During the restoration works in the castle of Annecy-le-Vieux, the workers hear screams coming from the building and see a man running in flames and falling through the castle walls. He is the mayor of the town, Christian Verneuil, whose charred corpse is found by the PJ at the foot of the castle, with a broken neck and a strong smell of oil. Evidences in the building show that it is murder. Enzo Mattei, one of the volunteer workers, has a record and is the main suspect.

A stranger drags the body of a man across the pier onto a boat, strips him naked, and sails into the deep section of Annecy lake, where he throws the body overboard. While jogging through the city, Cassandre and Pascal find the body trapped in the bars of one of the canals. From his wedding ring, the PJ discovers that he is Thomas Valin, a lawyer for Eucaryos, an important biogenetics laboratory. Valin was defending the company versus the demand of Maxim Vernoux for the use of a new medication. Valin's wife, Sandrine, and their twelve-year-old son, Gaspard, are devastated by the news.

While being transferred from prison, two prisoners escape by shooting a gendarme. During the persecution, Lieutenant Marchand shoots one of the fugitives and faces an internal affairs investigation. The second fugitive is a drug addict who tries to prove that she did not kill her mother.

A young doctor is found dead in his car, suspended from a rocky peak. Apparently, he had a huge debt at the local casino where he played blackjack. He had also issues with Isabel Contin, one of his patients with bipolar disorder.
