John Cardinal found it hard enough digesting his wife Catherine's surprise suicide on long leave, getting visions of her, but also finding anonymous cards blaming him for her death. As he doubts the suicide, he calls markers from experts when back on the job for his private investigation. His deputy officially takes the lead while he 'reconvalesces', on a mysterious case with a double bloody murder in a lake house, both corpses being missing and traces of an unidentified witness - in fact Sam Duchene, the lover of real estate agent Randall Wishart. An apparently unrelated mystery is a young man's suicide after being dumped.

Cardinal is inspired to look for the missing corpses in the lake, as their yacht is also missing. Divers locate both, the deceased are identified as not the owners, who are overseas, but business couple Roman and Irena. The house was fro sale trough Randall Wishart, who keeps quiet about his private use of the beds with Sam, whom he urges to keep quiet, while someone seems to stalk her.

Cardinal starts questioning people he got arrested as suspect of sending the cards about his wife's alleged suicide, dismissing his boss's fears that may compromise all his suspects' extant court cases. Checking Randall Wishart's fake alibi, Troy Campbell, sets cardinal on the right trail. The real estate agent refuses to help identify the anonymous caller which cardinal rightly assumes to be his lover Sam Duchene, whom he instills to keep quit, especially about him. Fellow 'adopted son' lemur pities, unlike the latest 'warriors' recruit harlot Nikki to both boys' taste, Jack, whom the insane 'matriarch' Sharlene 'Mama' Winston whips as incentive to make up for a panic kill that prevented them to take possession of a small arsenal from the murdered couple. Furthermore she torments kidnapped native Lloyd Kreeger.

Lemur

Cardinal deals with the official case, his own informal investigation into Katherine's death and their daughter Kelly in the funerary process. Sharlene 'Mama' Winston's torture of Lloyd Kreeger gets further out of control. Having been linked to the murdered arms dealers, Randall Wishart is arrested. Jack finds the locker and overplays the weakling caretaker. Sam Duchene is identified after anonymously contacting the police and made to realize lover boy Randall sent friends to intimidate her into silence, as Misha Pulaski confesses. Under 'matriarchal' bad influence, 'adopted dropouts' Jack and Lemur fall out, while rivaling for Nikki's confidence, but remain committed to the 'big plan' requiring a small arsenal.

Jack reports his 'brother' Lemur killed during an unauthorized robbery, but Nikki suspects him of eliminating his rival for her. Matriarch Sharlene Winston, whose records show grave mental illness and cult past as well as links with the 'adopted' screw-ups, cares only for the weapons for their army, which Jack promises to deliver and expects to command as best lieutenant, only to be frustrated by another demand to 'earn trust', while abducted Lloyd Kreeger still doesn't break. While Catherine's death brings daughter Kelly to the bottle, Cardinal sticks with the informal investigation but agrees to let colleague Delorme try out her fresh view.
