With Veronica back home Lionel is a changed man, buying her presents and being kind to his staff. He even suggests putting Jacko up to join his Masonic lodge and gives him time off to join new girlfriend Francesca, a classical violinist, on her orchestra's Swedish tour. However his attitude changes when he discovers that Jacko played a part in Philip breaking off his engagement to Lesley, costing Lionel the perks of a loan from Philip's father. Suddenly the holiday and the Masonic invitation are off.

Lionel and Veronica try to make Lesley curb her extravagant spending so that Lionel can afford his own loan for expansion, with the result that Lesley decides to move into her own flat. Meanwhile Jacko and Eric undertake a job for local pub landlord Elmo and Jacko agrees to escort Isabel, the pub's elderly cleaner, to a party. However Sandra, who has started to date Jacko, gets the wrong idea and assumes that he is taking Lesley.

Lionel meets Jacko in the pub garden Wendy house for a secret mission - which turns out to be decorating Lesley's flat. Lesley is dating the considerably older Peter but dumps him when he refuses to give her a job. Lionel and Veronica, disapproving of the age gap between the two, are relieved and Jacko agrees with them. Ironically Jacko's attempts to chat up a student doing a survey in the pub fail because she regards him as being too old for her.

Gloria is heart-broken when Reg, tired of her infidelities, leaves her to become a lobster fisherman in Devon. The anguish is short-lived however when she meets nice but dim army officer Giles - and the fact that he is supposed to be Lesley's new beau is a minor detail. Eric and Jean fall out with old friend Steve and his wife over child-rearing whilst Sandra, nominally Jacko's girlfriend, still refuses to let him over the doorstep after their dates.

At Veronica's suggestion Lionel sends Jacko on a management course but he gets thrown off it after he is caught trying to date tutor Miss Rathbone. As a result everybody accuses him of being irresponsible - especially Jean, who reminds him that Eric would have taken advantage of the opportunity. Suddenly he believes that they are all telling him to get married before it is too late, Sandra included.

Sandra resigns, giving as her reason Jacko's accusation that she was trying to trap him into marriage. Lionel interviews a possible replacement, Naomi, but she is very nervous and unsuitable, accepting a job as Elmo's barmaid instead. Learning that her father is influential at the Masonic Lodge Lionel pursues her and barters with Elmo for her services, though she turns them both down and Lesley takes the job. After some thought Jacko decides to propose to Sandra after all.

Jacko wakes Sandra in the middle of the night to propose and she accepts. Next day Lionel takes his staff and Veronica to celebrate at Elmo's pub, where Lionel is not happy to see Lesley serving behind the bar and suggests she moves back home. She does not argue. The wedding day arrives with Giles and Gloria among the guests but as Sandra walks down the aisle Jacko's past love life flashes before him and he tells Eric that he thinks he has made a terrible mistake.
