Stone is enjoying his lunch in the diner when a man called Hasdrabul Skaras approaches him and offers him a partnership. When Stone refuses, Skaras attacks him with his special blade with two spikes, one for each eye. After a gunfight, Stone barely escapes, and Skaras uses his cloaking power to vanish. Stone visits a museum to ask the curator about Skaras' name. He learns that the man is probably a Carthage warrior from the time of Ancient Rome who preys on women and children of vanquished warriors. Later, at the hotel, Stone meets Father Horn and the new receptions, Max. Stone eventually learns from a TV news report that Skaras is after the widows of a group of police officers and friends killed in the line of duty. Stone locates one of them, florist Gina Brayker, who helps him find a second widow, Madeline Fuller. However, she is under the protection of Detectives Ash and Clemens, who mistakenly believe that Stone is the one killing the widows.
