After a terrible fire in a nearby brothel, the Thrift is inundated with prostitutes suffering from burns. It soon becomes obvious that Dr. Joe Marsham is intimately acquainted with one of them. This discovery, by Dr. Eleanor Bramwell, causes the final rift in their relationship. In all the confusion Eleanor sends a child away with the brothel's Madame without realising what she had done. Later, when the child is missed, Eleanor and Major Quarrie frantically search the dingy back streets of London's East-End to find her but in vain. Bringing the shocking revelations of child prostitution to the attention of Mr. Barclay, a Thrift sponsor, causes an argument between Eleanor and Mrs. Bruce leading to Eleanor's dismissal. Distressed and angry Eleanor confesses her pregnancy to Major Quarrie, who loves her, and he agrees to marry her, which is what she wants but this is little comfort to her after the dramatic loss of her position at the Thrift.
