A woman veterinary surgeon is found strangled in a rural area of Greater Manchester populated by sheep ranchers, and DCI Lewis finds out she was a having a lesbian affair and might have been planning to leave her husband, a local fireman. Janine has reason to suspect that the killing may be linked to a string of arson fires in the vicinity. As a sidebar she questions Richard on details of his current girlfriend.

DCI Lewis and the team investigate the apparent murder of a well-known rock musician, Jack Taylor. There are several possible suspects including Jack's brother Sam, who claims to have been home at the time of the killing but CCTV footage reveals otherwise; and Michael's girlfriend Amy Kirkland who saw him having sex with a groupie after the concern. Lewis also has to deal with her distraught daughter, Ellie, a fan of the dead musician. The pathologist's report reveals that he was killed by a blow to the head and not a fall down the stairs as it might at first have seemed.

DAfter S Tony Shap is hailed as a "super cop" by his co-workers, he begins a separate rogue investigation of the stabbing murder of an illegal Belarusian immigrant who worked for a sordid private detective agency. He also crosses an ethical line when he becomes involved with another Belarussian illegal, a beautiful girl who was an associate of the dead man. Janine is distracted by her son's school truancy and hostility toward her and the prospect of leaving the team via promotion. Key to the investigation is the wife of an ex-cop now running a shady taxi service. She was abused by an ex-husband, who is now free after serving eight years for her attempted murder.

With Tanya Lucas dead - apparently killed by the same person to killed Peter Williams - Shap finds his own situation deteriorating. He admits to DI Mayne that he slept with the girl the evening she was killed and it eventually comes out that he was using her to try and locate Terry Camerton. He's still holding out about his true relationship with Terry and his ex-wife Sally Jowell. Meanwhile, the evidence begins to point to Sally's new husband Derek as the likely murderer. DCI Lewis still has major problems at home with son Tom and thinks she will apply for the the Superintendents' Board thinking she may have more regular hours and a more balanced lifestyle.
