The Heelers are initially called to a school disturbance between two boys. The instigator, Sam Roper, is cautioned and sent home with his parents Colin and Jane Roper. But later an incident at the Roper household leads the Heelers to believe that Jane is a victim of domestic abuse. Rose's objectivity to the case is tested in light of her ex-husband Jeff also working at Mt. Thomas. The next day Colin Roper is found dead and it later transpires that he was the victim and not Jane. The revelation leads Rose into confessing that Jeff is still abusing her.

Highway Patrol roll into town and cause no end of hassle for the Heelers and the citizens of Mt. Thomas with their overzealous traffic offense fining. And P.J. is the first to be caught speeding and he's not too happy. It leads to a car chase with Wayne and Wallace in pursuit of a speeding motor-cyclist ending in the man's death. The man is identified as Billy Peters, a good friend of Nick and it leads to an investigation which causes intense internal problems. Meanwhile, P.J. investigates a suspected robbery at the local veterinary surgery.

Maggie is called to a disturbance in the local lake by young teenagers and is conned into trying to rescue one of them giving the others time to steal her gun-belt and cuffs. Tom urges her to find them quick or there could be dire consequences. Meanwhile, Nick and the rest of the team have to show the ropes to Inspector Faulkner's nephew who is on a work experience placement at the station.

Adam's older brother Sam soon becomes the main suspect and the only witness to the crime is Clancy, a mentally disabled man. Meawnhile, a pair of troublesome brothers keep the Heelers busy.

The police decide to set up their suspect by using Maggie as the bait, but will PJ and the others save her in time after the plan is called off? Meanwhile, Sasha and Nick's relationship comes to an abrupt end, while PJ and Maggie share their first official kiss.
