Lost BABYLON. In Iraq post-Saddam, local and Egyptian archaeologists seek proof for the Biblical reputation of the metropolis Babylon, greatest capital in Mesopotamia, once worldwide. It was repeatedly destroyed and rebuild. Its first glory under Hammurabi, the great lawgiver who unified much of the country along the Euphrates, was short lived. The true pinnacle was reached under Nebuchadnesar II, whose empire stretched into Persia and the Egyptian border. He elaborated his capital to unprecedented grandeur. The Tower of Bable is located, a zigurat of record height, as well as the hanging gardens, requiring irrigation technology proven in Pharaonic use centuries ago. The center piece was the huge Ishtar tower, decorated in honor of the lion deity, the lower part being a dam against river floods, inherited from the king's father, but redone greater some 14 times, using precious ceder wood, the main prize in conquering Lebanon. Finally the 'impregnable' double city walls and moat, hard to trace nowadays except in the east, suggest a population over 200,000 and resources to stand a siege for years. The city's prosperity, enabling such lavish prestige projects, depended on the exceptionally fertile Crescent land and well-developed trade, in sensible collaboration with neighboring cities, whether under a strong monarch or not.
