Mike and Rio enjoy a false sense of acceptance in their Nebraska small town when the draw of lots assigns them to host the annual local fans' season kickoff party for the state varsity football team "(Corn)Huskers". Preparations for food and so on are hard enough, without proper instructions or experience, but the culmination is a live pig hunt, and Rio manages to lose porcine protagonist Portia, so Mike volunteers, half-stripped, to act as substitute "prey". Meanwhile, Beau has moved in, blaming his shaky marriage on Rio's therapy, but they and Kay find it increasingly difficult to keep that arrangement hidden, especially as everyone noses around on the big day.

Mike and Rio consider Beau's warning not to let their marriage go bust like his in "phase two", so they try hard to rekindle their love life despite the hardships of farm life getting in the way of having satisfactory sex. Rudi and Constance dare not come clean about their affair to her son Brandon, who returns home as a front veteran, which impresses even Mike, but he turns out to be just another nerd seeking male friendship and luckily finds the couple on his waterbed, which Rudi is welcome to with his blessing.

Beau notices a branch likely to fall onto the house and mobilizes Mike and Rudy to saw it off, but bad planning leaves them stranded high up the tree, until Brandon comes by and proves himself an friendly, helpfully-crafty nerd, eager to earn friend status. Rio joins the town ladies on annual "girls day" to the city gynecologist and mall, which proves less wild then she imagined Omaha, but jealousy of Beau's (fake) dating profile renders Kay receptive to suggestions to "get back at him" by actual flirtation.

For Founders Day, Mike is tickled-pink to be invited as editor for the annual sole edition of the local 'newspaper', but not inclined to limit himself to the usual rehash of the festival traditions, including the play which Rio gladly accepts the major part 'Maiden of Bucksnort' in, making her a rival's sabotage target. Yet Mike's initially not inclined to go all the way when Rudi shows him an old diary suggesting the pompous founder's descendant Kent's claim maybe stolen from Rudi's own kin.

For Mike, Halloween-scaring Rio, like when they met, is the best annual tradition, but she hopes to scare him out of it, which goes wrong not only because of an actual vampire bat, yet truth time confirms their bond. Jacob's patience with his belittling parents ends when they catch him in the truck with a girlfriend and presume to give them "sex education", while Rudy surprises the nice boy by insisting that he must not cease risking to lose his girl's gang's respect as uncool but continue the bratty Halloween "trick or treat" tradition of throwing toilet-paper over his barn, that being the lover's year's supply.

The Visit

Mike and Rio might be OK with being the only farmers who aren't harvesting, but surprise visitor Donna's New York competitive obsession and besotting Beau after wriggling herself in bed with him earn them a corn parcel on Bowman land to harvest. While Mike continues their own work, Donna volunteers herself--only pep-talking with champagne and other treats--and Rio, who soon learns it's backbreaking work, and Jacob is nearly badly injured while kindly explaining that cutting is just the first of several phases. Rudy agrees to take Brandon off Constance's hands, but finds his helpful nerd approach too efficient, killing the fun of say making spoon men. Mike runs into trouble with a pig in labor, so Donna's pigheaded dedication comes in handy for once, and helps analyze their complex relationships.

Mike and Rio ponder whether it's time they tried for a child (his wish; she's too afraid), but "practicing parenting" on six piglets and conflicting advice from the Bowmans on the joys and pains of altering you entire lives for a kid as wonderful as Jacob decide the case. The newcomers learn the local preferred cards game, euchre, from the annual town tournament and find it quite revealing for less harmonious couples, like the Bowmans and braggart Kent's marriage.

Goose Glazing Time

The first farm - and married Christmas Mike and Rio looked forward to keeps being sabotaged by their neighbors. Beau is determined to give Jacob a happy Christmas with a quad as present and a generous truce with his mother, but Kay is so delighted they get intimate again, which sight on the couch traumatized Jacob so as to barricade himself in Rudi's barn attic. As Constance dares not admit she dates a loser like Rudi to he visiting mother, Rudi poses as the farmer and presents Mika and Rio as his penniless in-living staff, even commandeering their painstakingly prepared goose dinner.

Mike goes berserk when told he must place his seed order by the weekend and learning that Kay's the expert, takes over her women's group as research team. On school assignment, Jacob shadows Sheriff Constance, assisting her to grill Rudy, who clearly hides a past crime from his poker days, which she finds hard to handle. Rio has no luck launching herself as a therapist, except for counseling Beau and Kay's marriage crisis, which started over his inability to go on a cruise with her, which leads to an impractical, hasty repair.

Mike and Jacob, whose obvious knavish crush on Rio needs to be controlled, rival boyishly in alternative suggestions to help dumped Rudy man up and learn to be cool to stand another chance at Constance, who seems unable to accept his criminal past, or date again. After Rio's protestations over the mail woman illegally opening all letters, Debby quits and Constance commandeers Rio to take over the mail route, revealing that it's expected by many villagers that Debby helps according to what she read, so Kay and Deb join Rio in rescue operations. Rio reluctantly hides from her Manhattan friend that the farm is a financial hole; the friend invites Rio and Mike to her fashionable Iceland wedding but ends up starring them in an original alternative.

They conspire to make their surprise debut during Jacob's final, but the applause .proves the acing knave's true craving. After declaring Kay her best friend, Rio finds her a driving instructor from hell and tries everybody else, in vain end less discretely then intended.

Tired of being the city boy with the sissy car, Mike sets his heart on a second-hand truck although they can barely afford it, but the boys who promised to help fix and pimp it chicken out when they hear that he didn't consult Rio in advance. Meanwhile, the late reverend's Harvard-graduated successor instantly becomes the one everyone turns to for advice, forcing Rio to fire Rudy as practice secretary for lack of patients; even Beau deserts her for Pastor Paul.

Beau realizes that he neglected the farm too long as he can no longer pay off his bank loans, so when Mike discusses with him a lucrative plan to supply eggs to flirtatious restaurant owner Dolores, Beau schemes to steal and sell Mike's idea, but when he's found out, he's mortified and refuses to accept Mike generously figuring himself out, so they rival to disown their own egg quality.
