Adventurous New Yorkers Mike and Rio aren't quite happy with their rat race lives. When he inherits his aunt's Midwest farm, they decide not just to visit and/or sell it, but both quit their jobs to move their and live from the land. At arrival, it proves a leaky ruin, where nothing is produced any more. They also 'inherit' the weird barn inhabitant, old Rudi and his beloved animals. Superior neighbor Beau Bowman, his mistrusting wife Kay and their genuinely friendly teen son Jacob arrive and bring the rural community the repair the roof, expecting the city slickers to sell cheap so they can extend their farm, but the offended couple stakes their future on sticking it out, without a genuine business plan.

The Chicken and the Goat

Told that his aunt let the soil get exhausted, Mike is desperate and obsessed to find a solution, although Rudy and his barn animals seem unlike consultants, yet physically inspire an obvious solution--manure--so he decides to raise chickens. Rio fails to convince Mike to suspend his agricultural brainstorm to accompany her to a rare occasion to attempt breaking social isolation: a potluck she was grudgingly invited to as neighbor by Kate Bowman, but her home-baked cake (baked in the home of shopkeeper-sheriff Constance) passes muster no better then she, being too New York even for the only local gay. So when Mike finally takes twice-left Rudy's advice to attend for his marriage's sake, he soon concludes that the rude hosts aren't worth the hopeless effort. This macho display renders Rio horny enough to jump his bones in the barn, only to realize that they released a bull, who jumps the whole herd's bones, wasting a fortune in breeder sperm.

The Return of Short Shorts

Mike attempts to fit in with the Coffee Boys in order to get rid of his old nickname, "Short Shorts," by trying to prove to them that he's a "true farmer." Meanwhile, Rio finally gets Constance to open up to her, and she discovers that Constance has a liking for Rudy.

Beau blames it on Rio and takes revenge on Mike, as impossibly hostile judge in the county fair best hen competition.
