Two new arrivals, a pilot named Jeb Pruitt, and Samantha Green, a nurse who is General Moore's daughter which no one is aware of. Boyington knowing that Pruitt lied about his age, plans to send him back. Boyington and Samantha hit it off. And when Moore arrives to talk to Boyington about a mission, he finds them together. Moore wants Boyington to undertake a dangerous night time mission. When they have problems, Moore decides to send them some new equipment that's suppose to help them. Thing is the one who knows about the equipment who's suppose to show them how it works, doesn't show up. Pruitt knows the equipment so Boyington reconsider his decision to send him home.

The base for the squadron comes under attack from Japanese land forces. The situation becomes more desperate with need to evacuate the nursing staff. With all retreat cut of the men and women decide to make their stand.

A friend of Boyington's, who is the number 1 ace, is shot down by a Japanese pilot who is known as the Iceman and who only goes after the top pilots. Boyington is now the number one ace pilot and he is told that he has to go back to the States to go on a bond drive. The commanding officer who is going to replace him is not exactly what the squadron is used to.

The Japanese are bombing LaCava and they damage the runway. Boyington then asks Lard if he can get some SesBees to repair the runway. Lard tells him if he can find one, he'll authorize it. He does. When he goes to see the man in charge, he says he has too much to do. But when Boyington tells him that a USO show will be visiting the island, he agrees. It seems that while he was at Lard's office, he heard of a USO show coming so he has Casey find out if they can come to the island. But when he calls he is told they are not coming. So Boyington has to get some of people to pose as a USO troupe to appease the SeaBees.

The squadron save a transport plane under attack from the Japanese only to find later the wife of the president of the United States was on board. The subsequent publicity becomes overwhelming.
