Kate is a young woman with a traumatic past: she was lucky to survive the genocide in Rwanda against her people, the Tutsi, but she has been deeply scarred. Thanks to her adoptive mother Eve, she was able to grow up peacefully in the Western world. But now their relationship is rocked by a violent dispute. With the help of Eve, who is a prosecutor, General Simon Nyamoya is to be tried at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. The man, of all people, who put a stop to the genocide in Rwanda that Kate and her people have suffered so much. He is still a hero in their eyes, even if he now has numerous serious crimes to answer for. And meanwhile, the worst villains and perpetrators of the genocide are still at large. For example, Patrice Ganimana, in whose name nearly a million people were murdered. Canadian UN Major Charles Bouchard is not about to let him off so easily. When he believes he has encountered him in a hospital, he tries to turn him in. Meanwhile, the trial in The Hague begins, and Kate and Eve's relationship is put to the test.

A group of assassins manages to infiltrate the courthouse where the trial of war criminal Simon Nyamoya is to take place. In the process, prosecutor Eve dies, and the proceedings come to an untimely end. Kate regrets the recent difficult relationship with her mother, and that she could not reconcile with her in time. Now she wants to find out what drove her mother to accuse Nyamoya. So she seizes the opportunity when lawyer Michael, longtime friend and colleague of Eve's, asks her to work with him. The case is to prove the innocence of Alice Munezero, a member of the Rwandan parliament who commanded the military during the civil war. She is to be extradited to France and charged with the murder of a French civilian. Kate follows up and makes intense investigations. In the process, disturbing information comes to light about who else is involved in this case. It is possible that she is acting against the interests of some states, which puts her in immediate danger.

Can it be a good idea to meet a stranger pretending to be a friend and offering his help in the catacombs of Paris? Kate finds it harder and harder to trust, everyone seems to be hiding something and has their own agenda. Even her mother was keeping secrets from her - not exactly a show of love for her adopted daughter. And then Michael's health is also a cause for concern. Despite everything, Kate and Michael don't give up on proving Alice Munezero's innocence. A new clue gives them hope: the allegedly murdered priest may be hiding in a monastery. The search for him, however, turns out to be extremely dangerous, sinister figures want to prevent his reappearance at all costs, including rubber baron Jacques Antoine Barré, whose son was killed in the civil war in Rwanda. If the true circumstances of his death were to come to light, it would not only be unpleasant for himself, but possibly also for the French government. Or Brigadier General Lesage, who stubbornly holds the official version of the French army's mission. Can Kate and Michael uncover the truth and prove Alice Munezero's innocence before French intelligence puts a stop to them?

With the final proof of her innocence, Alice Munezero has not only regained her freedom, now she also has new opportunities. The politician, celebrated as a heroine, could be a promising candidate for the presidential election. After Kate's and Michael's successful work, the next problem arises: Patrice Ganimana, an accomplice to the Rwandan genocide, suddenly shows up in Britain to have his brain tumor treated. Kate, Michael and the British justice system try everything to prosecute the criminal so that he gets his just punishment. In the process, they repeatedly come into conflict with his defense attorney Blake Gaines, who will stop at nothing to protect his client. When suddenly, intimidated, a large portion of the state's witnesses recant their testimony, Western justice threatens to fail and the case is shelved. Kate and Michael's relationship is thus thrown into a conflict of interest. Should the war criminal be extradited to stand trial in Rwanda? Michael does not want to risk that such a success could represent a triumph for the incumbent president, which would decide the elections in advance and leave Alice Munezero without a chance. For Kate, on the other hand, the most important thing is that Patrice Ganimana be convicted at any cost; after all, he is responsible for the genocide of her people. What is the price of justice?

For defense attorney Blake Gaines, he's getting revenge for getting involved with the devil. Meanwhile, presidential elections are coming up in Rwanda. Bibi Mundanzi is about to serve her third term, although the constitution only allows a maximum of two. Fortunately, laws can be changed with the consent of the people. Nevertheless, Bibi Mundanzi is on her own when it comes to her private problems. The politics of the last few years have made her tired, and she has no time for her family, which is why daughter Mary feels left alone. Now she must also compete with her sister Alice Munezero for the office of president. Alice is supported by lawyer Michael Ennis, much to Kate's displeasure. She doesn't understand at all why Michael neglects her. She is soon to find out why. Left to her own devices, Kate follows in the footsteps of her mother and hunts down war criminal Patrice Ganimana. In doing so, she ventures directly into the lion's den. Has Kate taken on too much with this decision?

Patrice Ganimana's warnings about Kate's safety are borne out when Kate and Alice are attacked. Nevertheless, Kate faces down danger in her continued search for the case file her mother had prepared against Patrice Ganimana years before. But are establishment forces somehow closing ranks to impede bringing Ganimana to justice?

Kate and Florence return to the UK to locate a final missing item from Eve Ashby's case file against Patrice Ganimana. But someone is ahead of them, stopping at nothing to kill and terrorise his way to this key piece of missing evidence. Meanwhile Michael in the UK, Alice Munezero in Rwanda, and Eunice Clayton in the US, all believe the time has finally come to reveal the truth about a long-buried crime - which will in turn expose Kate to a dark, shocking truth about her own past, and which may destroy her relationship with Michael forever.
