Patrick McCarty and his wife Kathleen and kid sons Billy and Joe moved from Ireland to New York in search of fortune, but found only poverty, so desperately join an organized trail of wagons to an obscure town in Kansas. They spend their last cash on a reduced rate Billy arranged by charming Mr. Moss, the eldest driver, who mentors him on the way in Western life, including shooting. Alas the 'promised land of opportunity' is just a muddy dump somewhere in nowhere, yet exploited by the least poor charging for dubious lodging and employing at miserable terms. Having lost a brave uncle, shot by horse thieves on the way, crafty, good-natured Billy -then twelve- starts developing his own sense of justice, protecting weaker kids, and rebellion against the abusive strong.

After Billy's father's death, penniless mother Kathleen and the brothers leave the Kansas dump on a trail west all the way to New Mexico. In the booming town of Santa Fe, she takes a poorly paid job in a boarding house, where Billy grows up as dishwasher with Mexican buddy Carlos. Just for the money, Kathleen marries dodgy entrepreneur Henry Antrim, whom Billy instinctively dislikes. Physically matured, Billy must watch powerless how 'mere Mexican' Carlos is murdered by a poker cheater whom the corrupt sheriff protects, as reporter Ash Upson explains another sick result of the secret societies of rich manipulators who control everything in their parts of the US. Billy catches Antrim in the brothel, but he's also broke, so it's time for the family to move again.

Antrim, Kathleen and the two boys relocate to Silver City, trying to start a new life. But all their dreams are shattered - and Billy loses everything.

After wandering penniless in wasteland, Billy falls in with a dubious character who calls himself Alias, and helps him to work- officially as cowboy, but soon as cattle thief. When a nightly robbery goes wrong, he kills a man in self-defense and ends up on the run, jailed by a crooked sheriff after coming clean and visited by sympathizing Ash Upson before his escape. Barely surviving an encounter with Apache Indians and the desert, he faints presumably dying of thirst, but wakes up being nursed in the arms of a young woman, who eagerly becomes his lover, but happens to be the girlfriend of gang leader Jesse Evans, who plans to collect the bounty on Billy's head. Escaping again, Billy becomes a wanted man in both US and Mexico.

Billy is initially welcomed warmly by the Seven River gang leader, his old mate Jesse Evans, but as Barbara's obvious love for both stirs rivalry, he leaves just in time. Billy seeks a new start in Mexico, notably Chichuahua, where he gets robbed by a shoe-shiner boy and saved from murderous robbers be local Melquiades Segura, who admires his shooting skill and drags him along to take on gambling crook Don Ortiz. Their winnings are stolen by the siren cousins of the local patrician widow, whom Seguar decides to chase to California. Billy rather heads for Texas, but must eliminate Ortiz and his gang during a nocturnal attack.

Billy bumps into Pat Garrett, who is riding with Jesse and the 7 Rivers Gang. Billy joins them - but law makers are already closing in. They plan to flee to Lincoln County - but not before Billy fulfils one last promise.

Billy joins Jesse, Pat Garrett and another outlaw called Frank Baker, as well as the rest of the 7 Rivers Gang in their new camp just outside the town of Lincoln. The gang is now working for Lincoln's most powerful boss, Major Murphy.

We are on the eve of the Lincoln County War. Jesse and the gang are encouraged by Murphy to ramp up their attacks on those famers, mostly Mexican, who have signed up with Tunstall.
