Ben goes on a road trip with his Grandpa Max and cousin Gwen for summer vacation. When they stop at a forest, a meteor crashes nearby. Ben approaches the remains, and an alien device attaches itself to his wrist, allowing him to change into ten different otherworldly creatures. As Ben learns to use the watch and its menagerie of super-powered life-forms, an evil force lurks in space intent on taking it.

Having recently dressed up as a sea monster to scare Gwen, he's now taken for a boy who's taking a joke too far. Only the creepy Captain Shaw believes there's a monster in the water, but he's not the sterling character needed to help Ben regain his good word; however, when the monster later makes a very public appearance, Ben's word is restored and he's off to join the captain for a monster hunt, much against Grandpa Max's instructions.

The group goes to visit Aunt Vera who's now living in a retirement community. Ben witnesses some of the residents climbing walls and other superhuman behavior. When Grandpa Max is affected, it's up to Ben and Gwen to find out what's going on.

Ben's misuse of the Omnitrix for personal gain gets the Tennyson's booted from a 4-star hotel. Chafing against Grandpa Max's subsequent punishment, Ben heads out on his own, with Gwen trailing after him. At an arcade, they come across Kevin, a savvy street urchin living on his own and answerable to no one, who shares in Ben's current disrespect for authority and self-centered sense of independence. The two hit it off. When Kevin runs afoul of some street toughs, Ben uses the Omnitrix to help him out, and the two soon partner up. As it turns out, Kevin, unlike Ben, is a natural-born superpower, able to absorb energy like a sponge, but as his callous disregard for others becomes apparent, their friendship turns adversarial, and Ben has a supervillain to contend with, able to absorb and copycat his alien powers.

The Alliance

A clash with a ruthless gang of lady criminals in New Mexico puts Grandpa Max in a hospital but it also turns the gang leader into a cyborg when one of Vilgax's damaged trackers merges with her. The resulting trouble from trackers honing in on the Omnitrix puts Ben in mind to distance himself from Max and Gwen for their safety, but it also puts Ben in contact with Vilgax for the first time.

Last Laugh

The Tennysons go to a circus, but something's bothering Ben. Ben leaves the circus as the circus's star performer, Zombozo the Clown, starts his act. Ben foils a crime and returns to find the circus has disappeared, Grandpa Max is acting strange, and Gwen has vanished. Ben must overcome his personal fear to rescue his cousin.

A grateful museum gives Ben (as XLR8) some souvenirs after he foils an evil wizard's attempt to steal a recently discovered spell book. When Gwen gets jealous over the lavish public attention Ben receives, he gives her one of his souvenirs. She soon discerns it's a magic charm that makes everything go her way, enough for her to proclaim herself "Lucky Girl". Now the Tennysons have two superheros in the family (and an evil wizard out to thwart them both).

A Small Problem

Ben's penchant for using the Omnitrix for personal gain lands him in trouble again (but in part due to the Omnitrix behaving unreliably). Transforming at a water park to enjoy a height-restricted slide, Ben, to his chagrin, ends up as the diminutive Gray Matter, and just as Howell, an alien fanatic, comes along. Excited by "proof" of aliens on Earth, Howell grabs Gray Matter and, anticipating fame, notoriety and respect, contacts The Organization, a secret society bent on laying hands to all the alien artifacts it can get, but its reactions aren't what Howell expects or what Ben can live with.

Side Effects

Ben picks up a summer cold, leaving him at the mercy of both a severely runny nose and Grandpa Max's malodorous Asian remedy. Meanwhile, a villain with power over bugs takes his wrath out on a city when its councilwoman attempts to demolish the dilapidated building he and his bug hordes live in. Ben's cold impedes his efforts to rescue the kidnapped councilwoman by adversely affecting his transformations. Worst of all is the bug maniac's final retaliation - setting the city's nuclear power plant to meltdown and explode.

Secrets

Ben wakes from a nightmare and says an alien is coming after him. Grandpa Max tells them they're going to Mt Rushmore immediately. The alien from Ben's dream attacks them along the way. Ben tries to fight him, but the alien seems to know the Omnitrix's abilities. Grandpa doesn't stop to help Ben, he and Gwen continue to their destination, he reveals some secrets to his past, and his connection to the alien. Grandpa hopes to gather some weapons to help Ben in his battle.
