Eighteen-year-old Sophia Trenchard secures her humble family invitations to the now legendary Duchess of Richmond's ball, on the eve of The Battle of Waterloo. She hopes for a secret assignation with her forbidden lover, the aristocratic Edmund Bellasis. As war dawns, the young pair are torn apart and Sophia is left to conceal a devastating secret from her family. Twenty six years later in the newly built luxury of London's Belgravia, a chance encounter between the two families reignites a long-buried connection. Sophia's parents, Anne and James Trenchard, find themselves in the social circle of Edmund's mother, Lady Caroline Brockenhurst. Long forgotten history now comes back to haunt the Trenchards. They must reconcile their guilt over secrets they have kept hidden for years, as they are faced with a revelation that may spell ruin for their family name.

Caroline's attentiveness to the guest of honour grabs the attention of her brother-in-law, Stephen and nephew, John. It soon becomes clear to Anne, that the Countess plans to manipulate the situation to her advantage.

Stephen's adopted son John Bellasis enjoys a secret love affair with Oliver's wife Susan Trenchard, who seeks socialite promotion at any cost now ma Anne was formally invited by the duchess but hesitates to invite her back. James warns Anne her scheming may leave them social outcasts.

Loan shark Tomaszewski laughs away a credit to reverend Stephen Bellasis, waving a 'guarantee' from son John, the likely heir of Peregrine but without timing prospect. Having learned his mother hid the last silver to prevent it being gambled away too, John comes collect some things only to steal it from the suitcase in his room. John keeps bribing cautiously expensive butler Turton and reckless maid Ellis, who starts arousing attention from the duchess and Anne, for spying on the Trenchards, while continuing his affair with Susan, yet doesn't yet find out the secret of aristocratic interest in Charles Pope, whom he surprise visits. He hopes Oliver may give the game away during a visit, dreaded as boring by most gusts, to the family's country estate. After attending a rare sermon from Stephen, due to his sick chaplain, earl Peregrine of Brockenhurst finally gives his brother more cash, but not enough to pay off his dangerous debts.
