In a mystical land an orphaned prince discovers his ability to communicate with animals and uses his skill to battle evil. In the opener, Dar befriends a bumbling prisoner named Tao and they join forces to search for Dar's lost love, Kyra, who has been kidnapped and enslaved by the brutal Terron warriors.

Dar rescues a man, Akili, being pursued by Terron warriors. Akili had also been such a warrior but had angered King Zad when he became obsessed with one of the King's female slaves. Dar agrees to help Akili rescue this female only to learn the female is Dar's own Kyra. As the two men fight, driven by jealousy, they're captured by Terrons who force them to engage in a bare-chested battle to the death.

Tao, falsely accused of theft, finds himself sentenced to an island dreaded as a place of certain death. Dar's determined to free him but is first captured and condemned to be pulled apart by teams of oxen. Dar escapes and reaches the island where flesh-eating Birdmen build cages to catch their prey. Dar manages to rescue Tao along with the island's pair of young lovers, Nylas and Haisa.

Kyra manages to escape from King Zad and is briefly reunited with Dar in the forest. Zad, desperate to have Kyra returned to him, enlists the aid of the Sorceress who casts a spell on Kyra. Kyra then vanishes before the eyes of the anguished Dar and is imprisoned inside a crystal controlled by the Ancient One.

The villainous Castrone steals away a woman named Hyppolyte from a tribe of fiercely-independent Amazon women. The Priestess of these Amazons, who has good cause for hating all men, vows to get her back. Meanwhile Dar and Tao rescue Hyppolyte but she's suffered a snakebite and will die unless treated with a specific flower growing deep in the forest. Leaving her with Tao, Dar finds the flower and in the process crosses paths with Maleena, an Amazon who doesn't share that hatred of all men. Together they return the now-cured Hyppolyte to the Priestess whose attitude toward men has now softened..

Prompted by the killing of three of his elephant friends, Dar (Daniel Goddard) determines to track and battle Nokinja (Grace Jones), an Umpatra warrior. She is one in a long line of legendary hunters who kill animals solely for honor. Curupira (Emilie De Ravin) angrily disowns Dar and attempts to kill Nokinja, only to find that her demon enemy, Ketzwayo (Arthur Penn), is actually behind the animal killings. While Nokinja conspires to capture Ruh, Sharak and the ferrets, Ketzwayo insists that Dar and Nokinja fight to the death. Alone and friendless, Dar battles the magically powered Nokinja to save himself and the entire animal kingdom from Ketzwayo's evil designs. Knowing that the Umpatra believe it is dishonorable to use magic, Dar convinces Nokinja that her triumphs are a result of Ketzwayo's powers, and she commits suicide. Without the possession of a human soul, Ketzwayo becomes vulnerable and is killed by Curupira.

An idyllic day in a kingdom in the Downs ends tragically for a princess (Brooke Harman) when one of her unicorns is brutally slain for its magical horn. Dar (Daniel Goddard) and Tao (Jackson Raine) are accused of the killing and sentenced to die by the Princess' Chancellor (Jack Heywood), who is the real perpetrator. The Chancellor delivers the horn to King Zad (Steven Grives) and demonstrates its magical power to heal. Greedily, the king demands that the last two unicorns be captured, at which time the Chancellor can dispose of the Princess and take over the Kingdom. While Sharak journeys to try to inform the Sorceress (Monika Schnarre) that the unicorns are in danger, Dar and Tao manage to escape and save the Princess from her betrayer. Unfortunately, Dar's rescue attempt comes too late to save the remaining two unicorns from capture by King Zad's army. Meanwhile, The Ancient One (Grahame Bond) temporarily returns Sharak (Daniel Fitzgerald) to his human form so that he can admonish him for visiting his former lover, the Sorceress. With time running out for the unicorns who cannot withstand captivity, Dar and Ruh join forces to free them from the Terron kidnappers. Deciding that the Earth is too dangerous a place for the unicorns, the Sorceress "takes them back" as they prance off into the heavens.

The supernatural aspects of Dar's world are revealed through the evils of the Black Apparition, the forest's most powerful prince. He grants Ketzwayo life once more and the power to infect the animals with madness, and because of his connection to the animals, Dar's mind is greatly affected as well. The Ancient One proves his extended powers and his displeasures with the resurrection of Ketzwayo by threatening Curupira, damning Sharak to the form of an eagle and seeking his revenge by removing the constellation of the unicorns created by the Sorceress.

Dar and Tao encounter Muraki, a young girl running for her life. Unbeknownst to our heroes, the girl harbors a secret, a secret that three Venatu warriors are willing to kill to gain. Although Dar and Tao lose the girl, they encounter and defeat one of the warriors and find the remains of their latest victim, an old man.

She is Zuraya, a beautiful woman with a mysterious curse that dooms her to hunt the night alone until she causes the death of The Dark One in the shadows. As an animal trainer traveling with a circus troupe, she, like Dar, shares a special bond with the animals. The Slayer, a wolf she trains, stands by her at all times, ready to inflict the extreme punishment Zuraya is fated to perform. Despite the obvious attraction, Zuraya leaves Dar somewhat abruptly.

Unable to come to terms with his dream alone, he approaches the Sorceress with his plan to draw all the children of the lands to him to find his fated killer. The Sorceress decides to help him find the right child, giving him a magical baby mobile which will transform into the shadow of death when in the presence of the special child.

Dissension in the Terron ranks finally comes to the fore and enmeshes Dar and Tao. Qord, the Terron War Chief, and his followers attack a Terron group bringing home slaves as booty. As Dar looks on, Qord frees the captives and kills the Terrons, riding off without ever engaging Dar in battle.

The Ancient One visits the sleeping Sorceress and brings her spirit with him to Dar's camp, where he reveals to Dar's sleeping spirit a taste of things to come. The Sorceress explains that this gift of knowledge is in return for Dar's help in saving the Sorceress in the Burning Forest. Dar will soon change, irrevocably, as the world outside will change. Although he learns nothing more specific, he is granted the vision of a Terron hatchet flying through the air, hitting something that causes Dar pain.
