A Danger to Himself and Others

After his latest blacked out-killing, Norman is temporarily committed to a horrible psych ward. Norma can only get permission to return him home shortly, but has just a week to get him into the expensive private mental hospice she can't afford. Dylan is off to Portland for Emma's transplant surgery, which goes well, with her father Will Decody, but her absent mother checks in at the motel. Left only coked-in, Norman has another episode of transforming into killer Norma, and deals with the woman 'her' bloody way while Norma seeks the sheriff's help, in vain.

Goodnight, Mother

Dylan is still in Portland, considering recovering Emma's future with her father Will Decody, unaware her mother was slain by Norman in the motel. Despite initially turning down Norma's request for a 'fake marriage' for access to his health insurance, the sheriff bribes the rehab manager promising a marriage certificate in two months, but then Norman must sign for voluntary admission. Norma can't convince him, and when Norman, who insists to step up as motel manager, finds the faxed papers, he believes his beloved mother is the psychotic killer -as his father tells him in a nightmare- trying to frame him, so mother and son play cat and mouse until Alex arrives.

Norman resists psychiatric commitment and grimly blames Norma even more bitterly after accidentally finding out she sought to have him committed against his will, yet sees no better alternative to the worse public facility, hence enters but stays aloof of any therapy or patient, even friendly age-peer Julian Howe, who proves a very helpful mentor. Dylan wants a clean future with Emma, hence wants out of the drug business, and is surprised when he reluctantly comes fire his weed plantation assistant that he's already sort of written off himself. Sheriff Alex Romero made all arrangements to have Norman committed as his bride's charge and insists to make the marriage credible, despite the mere registrar's wedding, as a found-out fake could compromise his career as well.

Lights of Winter

Norman haughtily stays aloof of 'real' patients, ultimately expecting to be released after denouncing his mother to Dr. Gregg Edwards as the 'real killer'. Dylan surprises Emily by agreeing when she asks him to consider moving with her, but is worried by a confused call from Norman. While Norma's distaste for the make-believe marriage seems to mature into affectionate friendship for sheriff Alex Romero, he likes showing her off but is worried when the FBI inquires about money laundering at the sole local bank branch and its flirtatious cahoot clerk Rebecca Hamilton contacts him about three million in cash presumably still in his murder victim's locker. Maverick patient Julian Howe takes Norman along on his latest escape, but drags him into a nightclub, where Julian ends up beaten into hospital by bikers and milder-slapped Norman is scared enough to promise full therapeutic cooperation.

Preparing for a new life with Emma and her father Will Decody, Dylan applies for a Seattle sales job, which he gets after admitting his experience in weed 'trade'. After his scary adventure with Julian, he seems lethargic under medication, Norman commits to therapy with Dr. Gregg Edwards as if a father figure of confidence, who learns about his mother-fixation, witnesses and recognizes his next incident of incarnating her personality after an imaginary supportive visit from her warning against betraying family secrets. Norma is happy to bump in a store into a handyman who can repair the motel's broken stained glass, even designs a new one, but is scared to learn it's Chick Hogan, whom her brother hired and abused, wanting her to help him to revenge, as for her rape siring Dylan. Sheriff Alex Romero duly worries about the federal investigation into the bank machinations, finds his room bluntly searched in secret, and instills the seriousness of the situation into his flirtatious ex, bank clerk Rebecca Hamilton.

The Vault

Norman trusts therapist Dr. Gregg Edwards, who tells him about his multiple personality disorder, enough to allow questioning his over-protective Norma-personality, and going in hypnosis about his traumatic youth with a (wife-)abusive lush father. Sheriff Alex, who dealt with Rebecca and their greedy secret, is puzzled by Norma's virulent hostility when handyman Chick Hogan delivers the stained glass to them, and she comes clean that he blackmailed her to help track down Caleb, whom she refuses to expose to revenge despite having raped her fathering Dylan, yet lacked the courage to shoot Chick. Meanwhile Norma contacted Caleb in Costa Rica, which inspires him to contact neglected son Dylan, who starts his new life with Emma, getting Norman's blessing without telling that also means leaving Portland for Seattle.

There's No Place Like Home

Norman brilliantly convinces Dr. Gregg Edwards he's ready to return home as ambulant patient. He is shocked to find out that Norma married the sheriff to use his health insurance to pay for the psych ward, and isn't convinced when she claims it's basically for show. Norma almost turns hostile on Dylan when he keeps asking about Emma's mother, knowing she was at the motel but ignoring her killing. Rebecca tells Alex she's returning to her Midwest sick mother, regardless of the FBI investigation.

Norman is happy to be back home but biter to find out Norma paid for his therapy with a marriage, consumated it, and lied about it. Dylan and Emma were to get a festive sendoff with dinner and Christmas tree selection, but Norman's hostility to Romero spoils everything, he even sort of waves with an ax he chopped wood with out of frustration, especially as Norma seems to claim a love life of her own, Norman blames her having stifled every other love option for him. Federal agents stop Rebecca from returning home to the Midwest for a thorough DEA investigation.
