The wife and the friend seem to be getting very cozy while she continues to play the grieving widow in public a little while longer. The husband gets suspicious and starts demanding to see the gems. But who is cheating whom? Real violence starts taking place; this is no purely white-collar crime. And the crooked mortician is getting greedier after getting grilled by Barnaby.

She tells him that she discovered he was unfaithful and threw him out. They think he was despondent of no longer having his wife's money but she says she would have cooled off and asked him to return. She says that she even hired another P.I. firm to check him out when she suspected he was unfaithful and they say he was clean. What they don't know is that the investigator who was assigned the case has been secretly extorting the people he investigates by keeping their secrets for a price. And when the man refused to pay him anymore he killed him.

An ambitious young man working his way through law school (Jim Wayburn) who works for a bail bondswoman (Roxie Morgan), who just happens to be a friend of Barnaby, is tricked into securing the release on bond of a convict (Ross Kemper) in exchange for a promise of $200K. But it is all subterfuge and Kemper tricks Wayburn and bolts. Wayburn tracks him down and shoots him dead (after the other shoots first) and takes the loot Kemper had stolen and was on his person at the time of the shooting. Wayburn disposes of the body (although the audience is not shown how or where). Roxie asks Barnaby to find Kemper or she'll have to forfeit the bond. She does not blame Wayburn and is quite solicitous of him. Wayburn tries to fence the loot but Sven Rolly, Kemper's former partner in crime, whom he also cheated, wants his share.

Clete Larkin, an executive with an insurance company, is murdered by a double-crossing partner in crime. That person is sociopath Cam Wheeler, who just got out of prison. The police rule Larkin's death an accident, but Larkin's widow doesn't believe it, so she hires Barnaby Jones to investigate. Larkin had been providing Wheeler and his gang of thieves the plans for the security systems of several jewelry stores and other insured businesses. But Wheeler learned that Larkin had moved in on Wheeler's girlfriend while he was in prison, he was determined to end that relationship. There is tension between Wheeler and girlfriend Gina Nelson. There is also tension between Wheeler and the other gang members, who feel they are not getting a large enough cut of the loot. That tension boils over during their final heist of a high-end jewelry store, at the same time that Barnaby Jones is closing in on the gang.

She confronts the singer, and the singer hits her knocking her out. Her manager who likes the singer tells her that she's dead but in actuality is not. He tells the singer to leave and he'll handle it, he wakes her up and he gets her out before anyone sees her. They talk and he wants her to pretend to be dead. The manager likes the singer and if can make the singer think she killed her, he can make her do whatever he wants. But she doesn't want to give the singer a chance to go after her ex so she tries to go back. But the manager runs her over. Her father then hires Barnaby to find out what happened to her.

Initially, Barnaby learns that TV commentator Adam Montgomery and Larry Colter broke into Charles Tatum's home to steal incriminating evidence. During the break-in, Larry seduced the lovelorn maid, Jane, who knows him as Stephen. Adam is caught by Charles, but before Adam can shoot him, Larry intervenes, leading to a gunfight among the three. Charles Tatum is killed, and the two later try to make it appear as though Charles committed suicide. Later, Jane realizes that Larry (also known as Stephen) used her to assist Adam and himself in breaking into the house. Fearing she will reveal their scheme, Larry coldly and cruelly murders Jane and buries her body. Now, Barnaby is gathering evidence to prove that both Adam and Larry are guilty not only of blackmail and theft but also of murder.

Meanwhile a woman named Ruth at the center is having an affair with Travis blackmails him into seeing her by revealing the truth about Lockman, so Travis and Blake kill her too. Betty decides to go under cover herself (much to Barnaby's surprise) and investigate at Sylvia Blake's Center. Barnaby is suspicious of Sylvia and Robert in both murders and now he races to prevent Betty from becoming the next victim.
