When Mark is promoted to Kurt's position at the company Lori shows up and blackmails him into buying her a brand new car, an expensive dinner, and a job at his father-in-law's company, which he reluctantly agrees to at first to keep her happy and off his back because he loves her. But Lori is not done or satisfied with the possessions she has by a longshot. She calls Mark and tells him to kill Rita and marry her, indicating to him that he has no choice in the matter if he wants to stay out of prison. Mark, no longer in love with Lori and tired of her blackmail demands decides to kill her too. Barnaby is hired to investigate one murder and must race against the clock to prevent another murder.

But it turns out he's not the one and when he learns who it is makes an attempt on him.

He is suspicious of her husband Larry and his supposed "beef" with a fellow writer Brooke Leighton. He soon learns that their "beef" is a ploy, and they are having an affair. Brooke actually killed Larry's wife without Larry's knowledge and sustained a bite from her dog . Brooke's former fiancé, Dr. Thomas Reston who is still in love with her, wants to rekindle their relationship but Brooke refuses. Angry at her refusal, Dr. Thomas figures out that Brooke used him as a patsy to cover up her bite wound, that she and Larry are both complicit in Margery's death. He tries to blackmail her into being with him only and to dump Larry. Brooke alerts Larry and he kills Dr. Thomas, staging it as an accidental fall. Now aware that Larry and Brooke are responsible for both murders Barnaby is gunning for both of them before they kill again.

It is revealed that both men are responsible for stealing merchandise and hacking into the computer system at Kelso. Mr. Kelso demands a meeting with Chuck because he discovers he is the one who betrayed him. Chuck callously murders Mr. Kelso via computer. When Emily comes to Chuck's house because he failed to meet up with her so they could celebrate his new job at another company, she finds out he is partying and cheating on her with 2 other young women, Emily dumps Chuck in front of Brian. Chuck shows absolutely no concern and shrugs off Emily breaking up with him, claiming it was for the best (indicating he was only using her to climb his way to the top) and continues partying with the two women, while Brian leaves, disgusted by Chuck's actions along with his nonchalant attitude. Barnaby is shown getting close to the truth, so Chuck unsuccessfully tries murder him too. When Brian finds out about the murder attempt from Barnaby he confronts Chuck who coldly replies "I should have killed him (Barnaby Jones). Brian finally realizes that Chuck is not only a user, who steps all over people and their feelings, but he is also a "monster" who is driven by greed and power. Feeling remorseful for his own actions/complicity in the theft and murder Brian comes to his senses and threatening to go to the police, revealing the whole scheme. Chuck grabs Brian who fights back, leading Chuck to strikes Brian causing him to fall, hit his head, and die. Chuck stages Brian's death as a tragic car accident and thinks that he is home free but he soon becomes aware that Barnaby is hot on his heels the proves that he is a two time murderer and a thief.

However, one of his former victims, Lisa Howard, has tracked him down, confronts him, calls him "Ben", and threatens to reveal all to his latest mark, so he kills her during a struggle and stuffs her body in a steamer trunk, sending it to parts unknown, although we later learn she was buried in Sun Valley. Around the same time, a friend and associate inside the conman-now turned murderer's new milieu catches him in a lie, begins questioning the behavior of "Kohlmeyer" and becomes a bit too inquisitive for his own good.

In a physical confrontation, the much larger owner accidentally kills the other man, and the owner hides the body while directing his mentally challenged aide to dispose of the dead man's car after making up an excuse. Barnaby is hired by the now deceased man's wife -- who is the sister of the player who threw the game -- to try to locate her husband.
